The Majestic was set for a night of folk music and copious amounts of dancing Tuesday night. The Mascot Theory, Chef’Special and Frank Turner put on an absolutely amazing performance. To be perfectly honest it was not what I expected, but was one hell of a good time. As a frequent concertgoer, I’ve never had so much fun at a show before. This show probably had the most age-diverse audience I’ve ever seen. There were kids as young as 12 or 13 there as well as some 20-somethings along with a good handful of people over the age of 40. I know for a fact every single person there had the best time imaginable.

The last time the Wisconsin Badgers (2-3) played the Wake Forest Demon Deacons (5-1) was 1992. The Badgers lost by 26 in Madison. Boyz II Men’s “End of the Road” was the top song of the year and “The Silence of the Lambs”won the Oscar for Best Picture. But this time around, the Badgers hope their road trip to Winston-Salem marks the end of their losing road, and the beginning of their winning one.

If you are a lover of folk music, then Tuesday at the Majestic Theatre is the night for you. Frank Turner and The Sleeping Souls are headlining Tuesday’s folktivities. The Mascot Theory, a Madison-area band, will kick off the night as the set’s openers. Their name may sound familiar—they played a killer set on the Gilman Street stage at Freakfest this year. You know them, they were the awesome dudes dressed up as a skeleton mariachi band and blasting some original folk music. I had the opportunity to catch up with their front man, Erik Kjelland, and discuss the upcoming show, Madison music and life in general.

More than 39 minutes into the Wisconsin Badgers’ 63-57 overtime loss to the San Diego State Aztecs, the Badgers were in a nearly identical situation as they were in their 54-52 win over Delaware two days earlier.

While it certainly wasn’t their prettiest game, the Wisconsin Badgers (3-2) edged the VCU Rams (2-2) 74-73 Sunday to win third place at the 2K Classic at Madison Square Garden.

Over 100 people crowded a Capitol hearing room Thursday to testify on a bill that would require transgender K-12 students to use the bathroom corresponding to their biological sex.

The Broncos exposed a lot of weaknesses in their romp over the Packers this past Sunday, but the most apparent was the glaring ineffectiveness of Green Bay’s wide receivers. After Jordy Nelson went down with a season-ending knee injury, the receiving corps took an obvious hit, but many were optimistic the talent on hand, in conjunction with the reigning MVP in Aaron Rodgers, would minimize the effects of that loss. It was becoming more and more apparent that was not the case, and Sunday’s loss punctuated the point that a change needs to be made. With wide receivers to be had this trade deadline, Ted Thompson, I hope you are on that phone inquiring about several intriguing candidates.

I finally paid a visit to Madison’s new restaurant and bar, HopCat. The establishment finished construction over the summer, opening July 17, and is already a successful business with six other locations. I wasn’t sure what to expect prior to making a visit, but I heard consistent hype about it so I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to have my own experience. Based on my experience, this new addition to the collection of downtown bars in Madison is in for a long, successful service to the Badger community.

The dark stage entrance is something that many bands do. But when The Oh Hellos emerged on stage Saturday, they took this old trick to a new level. The nine-piece outfit took their places, picked up their instruments, and began to play. Quietly at first, with just the soft strumming of a guitar and gentle plucking of a banjo. Vocalist Maggie Heath began softly singing the words to “Like The Dawn,” and then, as her brother Tyler joined in, the music slowly began to swell. The drums picked up, the melody took form, and the other members of the band added their own voices to the mix. The climax of the song emerged, and suddenly the memory of a once-quiet stage became distant, replaced instead with a thunderous and captivating opening song.

HBO’s “The Leftovers” is something special, a series that ventures beyond the realm of what television attempts to cover. It delves into the deep, intimidating, often terrifying questions that you have been too afraid to ask. It is a rich exploration of the human psyche with sincere thought into what makes us this way and why. It is a show that is not always pleasurable to watch, but it forces you to feel, to question and to face the unsettling reality that you most likely will never learn the answers.

We may actually be nearing the apocalypse. Think about it: We are living in a world where Donald Trump is a leading presidential candidate, and the University of Iowa football team has an extremely high chance of finishing the regular season undefeated. If it’s hard for you to comprehend putting the words “undefeated” and “Kirk Ferentz” into the same sentence, I’m right there with you. However, the Hawkeye’s head coach threw some liquid nitrogen onto his hot seat and has the Hawkeyes primed for a Big Ten West division title, and maybe, just maybe, even more. Forrealz?

One week after Iowa traveled to Camp Randall Stadium and upset the Badgers in a close game, they looked to solidify their position as one of the favorites to win the Big Ten West with a win over Illinois.

There’s no question that Rafael Gaglianone deserves an enormous amount of credit for Wisconsin’s 23-21 win over Nebraska last Saturday. To have the mental fortitude to put two misses behind him, including one just 1:22 earlier is incredible to see from a college kicker, especially a sophomore from Brazil who’s gained infamy more for his celebrations than his placekicking skills.

As a battered Ukraine approaches an immensely favorable debt restructuring and a peace deal with Russia involving new, civil elections in rebel-held areas along its eastern region, its citizens should have no expectation of stability to follow. Since Russia began backing rebel separatists in localities of eastern Ukraine, the Ukrainian government, under President Petro Poroshenko, missed one important historical lesson from the Truman administration. No, I’m not suggesting that Ukraine have dropped “the bomb” over Moscow. Rather, Poroshenko forgot Truman’s massive success with the famous “Berlin Airlift.”
