Anyone remember high school English? It’s a safe bet that no matter where you went to school, you probably drew from a mutual stock of books. “The Great Gatsby,” “Catcher in the Rye,” “The Old Man and the Sea,” “Jane Eyre,” “Native Son,” “Beloved,” etc. Maybe you read “Animal Farm,” George Orwell’s allegory for the Russian Revolution and the rise of Josef Stalin.

Cheeseheads everywhere can rest easy tonight knowing the infamous Baron Rodgers, brother of the beloved Green Bay Packers quarterback, has been caught and put behind bars.

DULUTH, Minn.—For almost the entire regular season, the Wisconsin women’s hockey team appeared close to invincible. But after falling to Minnesota-Duluth 3-1 in the opening game of the WCHA Final Face-Off Friday, a game in which the Badgers seemed unprepared for their motivated opponent, Wisconsin has now lost two of its past four games heading into the NCAA tournament.

Twelve months after protests over collective bargaining erupted in
the state Capitol, Wisconsin's political division has only gotten
worse.

The sounds of dobro and mandolin will soon be wafting off the
historical stage at The Majestic Theatre. Maybe wafting isn't the
right word, more like pounding.

The trouble with two-piece groups is ensuring that their sound
doesn't stagnate. The White Stripes learned this the hard way when
their career trailed off after 2007's Icky Thump. And for
a while, it seemed like The Black Keys (guitarist Dan Auerbach and
drummer Patrick Carney) were in a similar situation. Purveyors of a
ferocious brand of blues-rock, with 2006's Magic Potion,
they were at the end of their rope. Something needed to change.

The Madison Police Department reported no problems or arrests at
Saturday's rally on the Capitol Square.

After watching the first month and a half of the season, I
really can't figure out what to make of this season's Wisconsin
men's hockey team.

The scourge of 80s and 90s arthouse cinema and general cultural
ne'er-do-well David Lynch has been busy lately, doing virtually
everything he can to put off directing a follow-up to his most
recent dose of cinematic nightmare fuel, Inland Empire.
He's written self help books and thrown together a photography
collection for Sparklehorse and Dangermouse's ill fated Dark
Night of the Soul and, oh, yeah, put out his own line of
coffee beans. So what does that leave? Well, while we're all
waiting for the inevitable children's book collaboration with Lars
van Trier (ANYTHING but another movie, I suppose), there's Lynch's
latest project to tide us over, his surprisingly solid solo debut,
Crazy Clown Time.

To say the University of Wisconsin System has reached its peak
in the budget crisis is to repeat a recycled and ubiquitous
headline currently echoing throughout the state. While the
impressive elongation of Wisconsin’s funding drought has started to
drown out the severity of any new budget cuts, this editorial board
recognizes that the funding storm currently hovering over the UW
System—and the causalities sure to result from it—deserve immediate
attention.

Yellowcard will take the stage at the Majestic Thursday night with
a level of energy and unity unusual for a 14-year-old band. Coming
off of a three-year hiatus, Yellowcard is looking to return to
doing what they love: touring and leaving an impact on their
fans.

Opening weekend had its ups and downs on the ice for the No. 17
Wisconsin men's hockey team (0-0 WCHA, 1-1 overall),
and those peaks and valleys were reflected in the outcome of both
games. Facing unranked Northern Michigan, the Badgers had to battle
back from two-goal deficits in both contests, but it was not always
enough.

The Wisconsin women's hockey team (0-0 WCHA, 2-0
overall) would have been hard-pressed to start off its 2011-'12
season any better than it did two weekends ago.

Despite the major movie studios' absolute infatuation with 3-D (or
perhaps, more accurately, the inflated box office hauls that
inevitably accompany 3-D) it seems like its popularity among the
general public has once again peaked and is beginning to wane, just
like it did 50 years ago when the iconic red-and-blue glasses were
still in use.

In recent months rumors spread that Palestinian President
Mahmoud Abbas would seek the United Nation's
recognition of Palestine as a member state. Those rumors peaked
just as Abbas announced he would indeed submit his people's
application to the U.N. Security Council, despite the
very explicit threat of an American veto. Since the Palestinian
application had little chance of passing the Security Council, one
might question why the Palestinian leadership would submit the
proposal in the first place.

This year, the city and UW-Madison officials are going buck wild in
their attempts to curb alcohol consumption among university
students on and off campus. First, Mayor Paul Soglin
introduced a Nuisance Party Ordinance that has the potential to put
students on a ""chronic nuisance list."" Then, he
voiced his plans to halt the 2012 Mifflin Street Block Party, and
now Dean of Students Lori Berquam looks to wean UW
students off of Old Thompson's teat through the initiation of
alcohol awareness seminars.

In high school, students are told their four years of education
will prepare them for the rigorous academia of college. For Alex
Giordano, this was not the case.

One of the biggest challenges humanity faces in the 21st century is
the protection of the environment. With the human population
reaching 7 billion people this year, increased consumption of raw
materials land and the onset of global warming, ignoring
environmental problems is no longer an option. People across the
globe need to change the way they live and make huge investments in
""green"" infrastructure for the future.

This weekend, students from across the campus, city and state will
flock to Madison to partake in the annual Mifflin Street Block
Party. A historical event birthed from an organized Vietnam War
protest in 1969, the block party has evolved into a cornucopia of
drunk kids separating from their friends and getting hog-tied in
the street. While the event is expected to harbor thousands of
individuals sipping from boot flasks and wine disguised in soda
cans, this Saturday the party rules have changed … and you can cry
if you want too.
