No one who has lived in the city of Madison would deny that we reside in a vibrant place, brimming with activities for students. Madison is home to restaurants featuring food from more countries than the average American is probably aware of, scenic lakes and parks, a state of the art arts center, a thriving farmer’s market and more indie bookstores and coffee shops than you can shake a scarf at.

OK guys, so it’s time to face some facts. There’s going to be another “Star Wars” film. We can’t stop it. And J.J. Abrams is going to direct it. That much we know.

Normally I try to examine some deep philosophical argument pertaining to the culture or state of video games as a whole in this column. But, I just watched the "Breaking Bad" finale and don't really have it in me to rhapsodize about my despair over the lap dance game in "Grand Theft Auto V." Instead, I'm going to try and brighten all your days by recommending some of my favorite video game music composers working right now.

There are a lot of really good indie movies. From the bizarre early work of now blockbuster filmmaker Harmony Korine, including wandering flicks such as “Gummo” and “Trash Humpers,” to Miranda July’s uncomfortably moving “Me and You and Everyone We Know,” many have found ways to make incredible cinematic experiences sans a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer budget or Academy actors.

I’ve been put in a very awkward place. As a fan of Frictional Games’ “Amnesia” series, I had already figured that my perceptions would skew my reception of the game. But I was wrong. I also thought that giving the latest title in the series a gushing recommendation would be as simple as copy pasting “BUY IT BUY IT BUY IT” until I ran out of word space. I was wrong about that, too. It’s a very uncomfortable position to be in, you know. Horror games are only supposed to make you uncomfortable while you’re playing them (and for several weeks afterward when you have to walk home in the dark after work).

Minus The Bear recorded a second unplugged album—Acoustics II. The album, if you didn’t infer from the title, is a 10-track spread of unplugged versions of some of their most popular songs.

English indie rock groupArctic Monkeys’ fifth studio album, AM, dropped this week. The name is a perfect double-entendre, representing both the initials of the band and the presumed setting of the album, a post-party drunken and drug fuelled state of loneliness and near desperation, exemplified in “No. 1 Party Anthem” (“It’s not like I’m falling in love/I just want you to do me no good… ”), “Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High?” and “Do I Wanna Know” (“Ever thought of calling when you’ve had a few?/Cause I always do”).

We entered Saturday with renewed spirits. We’d dried off and so had the world; nothing but blue skies and slightly less health-endangering heats awaited us. The plan was to get to Pitchfork at around 1 p.m. and catch White Lung and Pissed Jeans for a notably punk afternoon, but underestimating both Chicago traffic and the lunch rush threw us off and we arrived too late to do either. Instead we headed over towards the blue stage, our consistently shady bastion, to see Julia Holter.

As much as Pitchfork gets a bad rap these days (I recently asked a “too-cool” friend of mine if he wanted to go see Pharmakon and Wolf Eyes, making the mistake of mentioning it was a Pitchfork sponsored event. He loves both acts, but responded, “that sounds like the worst thing ever,”) it’s hard to doubt the staff’s intentions and love of music. Even with all the ugly talk of “politics,” “agendas” and “taste making” surrounding their buzz band-birthing empire, you have to give them credit for building a truly devoted monument to the artists they cover. They do it all; interviews, music videos, cover stories, in-house sessions and more. Best of all, they put on the Pitchfork Music Festival every July at Union Park in Chicago.

Ah, summer. The sun is shining, the birds are singing, the lake is… being a lake. For three months at least, the world is bright and beautiful. What’s a better way to spend them than by shutting yourself into a dark room with a collection of strangers to be distracted by light and sound for a couple hours?

Revelry has been a buzzy topic on campus lately and seems to pop up in every discussion regarding the endlessly controversial Mifflin Street Block Party. Discussion surrounding Revelry has been so focused on pitting it against Mifflin that the music itself has been overshadowed. My only conviction regarding Mifflin weekend is to make sure students are aware that there are talented artists playing at Revelry, even if they aren’t as recognizable as the Skrillex or Kid Cudi songs that will be blaring from every house on Mifflin Street. These are a few artists performing this weekend:

Anybody with even a remote interest in the history of American music would do well to check out Michael Azerrad’s “Our Band Could Be Your Life: Scenes from the American Indie Underground 1981-1991.” It is a loving paean to a few of the most important bands on the American scene—bands like Minor Threat, Minutemen, The Replacements, Sonic Youth, Hüsker Dü and Dinosaur Jr—who could be said to constitute the pantheon of amerindie.
