Institutionalized religion has long had a history of predicting dire prophecies for the state of humanity if every choice and action of ours does not perfectly fall within its confines. Human beings are portrayed as the embodiment of purity that are corrupted by worldly sin and are hurtling fast towards an epic doom. Preserving that so-called purity of mind and body becomes a losing battle over time, one that humanity hangs on to by a very thin thread. Every new generation and decade then brings with it its own stench of depravity. While beliefs such as these may suffice for the masses of sheep and for the shepherd to keep them beautifully compliant, they’re in reality the well-crafted tool employed to curb human voice, freedom and choice.

It’s official. The National Letters of Intent for head coach Paul Chryst’s first full recruiting class have been signed, sealed and faxed to the UW Athletics office. Let’s take a look at the class and find out a bit about some of our newest Badgers.

The Wisconsin women’s hockey program is a well-established national powerhouse. Led by head coach Mark Johnson of the infamous Miracle team, the Badgers are consistently producing international-level competitors. Among the high-scoring offense, notorious head coach and consistent domination, a true talent can sometimes fall beneath the radar of a casual fan.

As children, respect was something that was taught to all of us in school. However, growing up as the sister of someone who has a disability, I think the world is pretty far from that ideal. Once, in middle school, we had a day of school when students from every class were mixed together for a day full of fun activities. Included in these activities were students from all grade levels, as well as the students from the special education class. Some people were very uncomfortable around these students with disabilities. Personally, I did not see this as a strange situation because my brother was one of these students with a disability.

Sunday afternoon before the Wisconsin Badgers (2-8 Big Ten, 6-14 overall) tipped off against the Michigan State Spartans (7-2, 16-4), all the focus in the Kohl Center was on UW’s “Think Pink” initiative, which raises awareness for breast cancer research. The nearly 10,000 fans in attendance all received pink Wisconsin basketball t-shirts and LED bracelets. Multiple announcements were made recognizing the fight against breast cancer. And both teams infused pink into their respective wardrobes.

Our generation has recently experienced something extraordinary—the revival, or rather, the awakening of “Star Wars,” a beloved franchise that has gone down in the books as one of the greatest series of all time. Now that “Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens” has been out for a little over a month, smashing records in the process, the dust has started to settle on how this film holds up to the others.

This week we’re talking about dormcest. It’s way less creepy than incest, but there is also less famous literature about it (“As I Lay Dying,” anyone?). When bunches of young adults looking to “find themselves” are crammed in the same living space for nine months, dormcest becomes inevitable. Context clues probably make this obvious, but “dormcest” is a made up term (not by me, by someone who is not me) that refers to the hooking up of individuals who inhabit the same university dormitory (in the biggest dorms, the term “floorcest” is more fitting). As budding young freshmen taking on campus for the first time, more than one of us most likely dreamed of meeting a special someone in our dorm or on our floor. It’s hard not to fantasize about the convenience and charm that would come with casually running into a cutie pie whilst wrapped in a towel (*gasp* so embarrassing and unintentional, *wink, wink, giggle, giggle*), or exchanging glances while studying in the den. But, what started as flirting and fun can sometimes transform into constant avoidance and hurt feelings. There is no reason not to get jiggy with fellow dorm dwellers, but there are a few tricks of the trade to help avoid turning dorms into walk-in skeleton closets.

With the hangover of the “408 game” still permeating the mind of the 2014 Wisconsin squad heading into its final two games, the Badgers’ grasp on the Big Ten West was theirs to lose. It narrowly survived the tight confines of Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City, Iowa and cruised in the battle of Paul Bunyan’s Axe the following week, earning a date with Ohio State at Lucas Oil Stadium.

We are fast approaching that warm and fuzzy time of year that brings with it the urge to curl up with a big ol’ bowl of Chex Mix and a love bug. Something about sweaters and commercial holidays leads people to want to pair off and find some mistletoe to snog under, but with the smorgasbord of sweet thangs our campus has to offer, deciding who to hit up can be intimidating.

With one controversial game-winning touchdown, Nebraska might have not only killed Michigan State’s playoff hopes, but also potentially influenced the Big Ten’s own standing within the college football landscape. While Michigan State had been hanging on to its undefeated season by a thread all year, squeaking out numerous close calls, that thread finally broke, providing what might be a fatal blemish to their once historically promising season. However, one must ask if that horrific “L” on their schedule actually is a fatal blow to the Spartan’s quest for a College Football Playoff berth. This foreshadows a much larger question at hand as well: Could a one-loss Big Ten champion be deserving of a College Football Playoff spot?

Mostly due to increased policing, Freakfest has become rather subdued and almost exclusively stab-free in recent years. As a result, local man Darrell Fingus has vowed to skip the annual event until he feels that his once-sufficient chances of being stabbed have been restored.
