A little bit pop, a little bit rock, a little bit folk and a
little bit alt-country'when it comes to his music, Mason Jennings
has been thrown into many different genres. Also, he's been thrown
into the mix with many of the famed singer-songwriters, such as Bob
Dylan and Neil Young, but he shrugs off the expectations with a
laugh. Although Jennings' first two albums were primarily sold at
shows, his recently released third album \Century Spring"" is sold
nationwide and is finally getting him some well-deserved notoriety.
On Friday night, Jennings and his band stop into Madison's
Barrymore Theatre, 2090 Atwood Ave, on the heels of the new album
to play a gig. The impressive Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire opens.

This past year has seen a deluge of what I will call art house
horror. Highly stylized and written for a literate audience, movies
like \The Others,"" ""Donnie Darko,"" ""Jeepers Creepers"" and
""From Hell"" tried their best to reclaim the genre from the
slasher and teen flicks of the '80s and '90s. ""The Devil's
Backbone,"" directed by Guillermo del Toro, leaves them all in its
dust. Tightly crafted, both visually and narratively, this Spanish
film shows what a horror movie can be at its very best.

Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in.\ Al Pacino
says this line in the movie ""The Godfather Part III"", and it's a
great line, despite coming from a movie that ate rocks. It's also a
line that I can relate to as in recent days I have once again been
pulled into a situation I thought I had escaped long ago.

Apparently the newest fad is to criticize the Olympics. I guess
the Olympics are a perfect target, considering the imbroglio over
the pairs figure skating competition and NBC's inane and
gut-wrenching coverage. Yet, I can't help but disagree with the
Olympics' growing number of critics.

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah'In the days leading up to the Olympic

insignificance of the round-robin stage of the competition, in

With all the sadness and strife that has come to tarnish our
collective consciousness in the past few months, the world is in
dire need of a psychological boost. Nothing revitalizes hope in
humanity like the sight of people comically carrying broom-like
instruments around an ice rink for no perceivable purpose.

Let me begin by saying I do not take war lightly. As a history
student, I believe I have a pretty decent grasp of what war can do,
not only to the combatants but to the countries used for
battlefields and the innocent civilians. Understand, then, it was
only through much soul-searching that I reached my final decision.
We need to bomb Russia back into the Stone Age. Before some of you
flip out over turning Russia into a giant Eurasian parking lot, I'd
like you to keep two things in mind.

The holidays are over, but comfort-food season is not. The media
has made a lot of jibber-jabber about the habit of turning to
comfort food in times of crisis. Wowza! What a revelation. Instead
of turning to a pint of expensive ice cream, I prefer to go to
Nick's.

weekend.

Behind closed doors scientists produce creations that cure
diseases, heal our planet and explain the laws that govern life.
Just because everybody is not in those labs does not excuse them
from knowing something about the advances that science is making
every day.
