Tuesday morning I woke up for class and turned on the
television, expecting to see the same highlights on ESPN that I had
fallen asleep to, only to see the breaking news that Brett Favre
had decided to retire.

Rather than waste space describing the tragedy that is Will
Ferrell's newest sports comedy Semi-Pro,"" this review will be a
plea to its star on behalf of the movie going public. Just because
every film you make has been box office gold doesn't mean we will
love you forever, and if this film is an indicator of where you are
taking your career, you've already passed along the crown.

Sitting at Mariucci Arena last weekend, it was easy to get
caught up in all the spectacle and tradition that is college
hockey.

Wisconsin forward Tara Steinbauer and guards Alyssa Karel and
Sarah Ingison hail from the Twin Cities area. But instead of

Javier Bardem kicks in the door to a hotel room, and before the

With the late Wisconsin primary gaining more importance in
recent weeks, the state has become an arena for the kind of intense
campaigning political junkies dream about.

I've spent my whole life trying to get good grades, be nice to
people and somehow avoid failing at life. But whenever I watch some
superhero movie or hear about someone saving the world from
whatnot, I think about how dull my life is in comparison.

God bless him. Matthew McConaughey just does not like shirts.

To put it plainly and simply, I hate anything cheesy. Ask any of
my friends, and they'll all describe me the same way. I can't watch
romantic comedies, the prospect of a heart-to-heart deep-feeling
talk sends me running in the opposite direction, and if anyone
drops a bad pick-up line around me I leave the bar immediately.

A year ago, I had the great honor, privilege and luck of being
able to fly with the Green Bay Packers to their game in San
Francisco (my dad won a contest at work and picked me over my mom).
Sometime between the crab dinner and the personal police escort to
the game, I remember thinking how nice it would be if the Packers
could win a few games down the stretch for Brett Favre and send him
out on a winning note.

Last month, after UW-Madison and Kyoto University researchers
announced a new technique that turns skin cells into cells that
look and function like embryonic stem cells, the world seemed to
breathe a sigh of relief. At last, the end to the nearly
decade-long stem cell war was in sight. Or, so it seemed.

There is so little for Americans to believe in these days.
Sadly, on Nov. 30 we lost one more reason to believe. His name was
Robert Craig Knievel, Jr., but you might know him better as Evel
Knievel."" Or, if not by his name, then perhaps by his appearance -
a man constantly wearing a death-defying smirk and a red, white and
blue leather jumpsuit (equipped with a fashionable cape).

Is there anything in the world less reliable than preseason
rankings or predictions? It doesn't matter if we're talking college
football, the NBA or curling. How can you honestly predict how good
a team is without seeing it play?

Eighteen years ago in preparation for Thanksgiving, each student

mom or their dad. Others said their pet hamster. Still others said
their best friend or their favorite toy.
