So the Badgers snuck into the Top 10 this week and in a lot of
ways it doesn't exactly feel as great as it should. Well if you
haven't caught football fever, you better gear up for basketball
season, because it's here.
(10/18/06 6:00am)
Disheartening. That is the best way one could describe the end
to the Badgers' basketball season last year. Winning only five of
its last 13 games, culminating in a 19-point catastrophe in the
first round of the NCAA tournament, was a rough way for a team to
end the season after beginning it 15-4.

Midway through last week, the UW men's soccer team was riding
high. Sporting a six-game unbeaten streak, ranked No. 22 nationally
and perched atop the Big Ten conference standings, things couldn't
have been going any better. Then Sunday afternoon, the Ohio State
Buckeyes snapped the Badgers back to reality, handing them a 2-0
loss and a gut-check.

Despite the absence of its top two players and captain, the
five-man UW men's tennis team achieved an eye-opening performance
at this past weekend's Gopher Invitational at Baseline Tennis
Center in Minneapolis.

The Badgers may have lost consecutive home games, but the men in
cardinal and white enter Sunday's Big Ten opener with a two-game
winning streak in regular season conference play.

With the UW men's rowing team preparing for the National
Championships, the women finished up their season over the Memorial
Day weekend.

Huzzah! Hearty congratulations are in order for the superior
athletes of The Daily Cardinal, as they vanquished their arch rival
The Badger Herald by a score of 8 to 6 in a most sportsmanlike
softball match Friday.

The Badger Baloney is obviously fake news—merely a satirical
commentary on life in Madison. Except in the case of public
figures, the people are not real.

The UW men's tennis team looks to begin its final stretch of Big
Ten play on a high note as it hosts No. 30 Michigan (2-0 Big Ten,
8-6 overall) this Saturday at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

It has become abundantly clear that I do not know when holidays
are anymore.

Dragon Quest VIII\ is an RPG. That about sums it up. Everything
people love or hate about the genre is prevalent in this title.
Enormous over-world? Check. Leveling up? Check. Party
customization? Check. Mythical fantasy setting with a lone (sort
of) hero trying to rescue it? Check. Yes, it's all there. So why
bother with it at all, especially if you're not a fan of RPGs?
Despite its lack of originality, this is one of the best RPGs in
recent memory. And for the über-geeky, it has a playable demo of
""Final Fantasy XII"" packaged with it.

After dismantling North Dakota at home in the quarterfinal round
of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association playoffs, the UW
women's hockey team (24-3-1 WCHA, 34-4-1 overall) will head north
for the semifinal and final round of the tournament. The foe this
time around is St. Cloud State (13-14-1 18-17-1l) who swept its
quarterfinal series against Ohio State.

Looking to get back on track in the Big Ten, and perhaps to make
a late season surge, the women's basketball team (2-7 Big Ten, 8-13
overall) got a much needed win against Michigan Sunday. Four clutch
free throws by senior Ashley Josephson held off a late rally by the
Wolverines (0-9, 6-15) to give the team a 75-65 victory.

The UW women's tennis team looks to win its second-consecutive
match of the spring Saturday. The No. 34 Badgers (1-0) play host to
No. 54 Western Michigan (1-2) this Saturday at Nielsen Tennis
Stadium.

'Prince of Persia' has always appealed to gamers with its
combination of Middle Eastern scenery and 'Matrix'-style
acrobatics, and the series' third installment only adds to that
reputation. 'Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones' once again places
the player in the sandals of the tormented Arabian hero, but adds
some new rules to make it worth coming back.

Whoa nelly.

For the second time this season, the Wisconsin men's basketball
team (7-1 overall) will take on a foe from the Colonial Athletic
Association as the Badger's welcome UNC-Wilmington to the Kohl
Center tonight. Having already dispatched of conference favorite
and highly regarded Old Dominion in the championship game of the
Paradise Jam tournament, the well-rested Seahawks (7-1 overall)
will no doubt provide a challenge for a Badger team that could be
playing with tired legs after having only one day of rest to
recover from a hard fought 77-63 victory over Marquette.
