Unlike in usual seasons, all 40 volleyball points for the 2014-’15 Border Battle, an all-sport contest between the athletic departments of Wisconsin and Minnesota, are on the line this week when the No. 5 Badgers (14-1, 5-2) take on No. 23 Minnesota (13-4, 3-3) in a home and away tilt.

J Mascis’s last record, Tied To A Star, was far more subtle than Dinosaur Jr.’s power-trio theatrics normally lend themselves to. Mascis, the lead guitar-player and vocalist for the Massachusetts alternative rock legends, turned in his thundering riffs and blazing solos for a gently picked acoustic guitar and meditative falsetto. While his fluid electric guitar stylings would occasionally make themselves known in Tied to a Star’s more dynamic moments, it was still largely another Mascis acoustic album.

How long has it been since the first indie artist turned toward a troubadour’s drawl and a Western backdrop? While the answer may be a little ambiguous with some answers tracing back to the early 2000s and others even farther, it’s hard to argue that indie folk as a genre has seen itself withered down over the years. Now the troubadour writes bad pop songs, their acoustic guitars strumming a few poorly mixed chords and their lyrics playing with uninspired—or maybe over-inspired?—hooks, blending them into songs more indulgent than impressive.

King Tuff (real name: Kyle Thomas) doesn’t hide behind any autobiographical ambiguities on Black Moon Spell. In fact, he’s pretty forward about who he is and what he wants to do. In “Madness,” he declares his raison d’être in traditional Alice Cooper fashion: “King Tuff is my name/I got madness in my brain/Pleased to meet ya/I’m gonna eat ya/because I’m batshit insane!” Nor does he hide where he comes from; echoing Springsteenian mantras, Tuff declares in “Black Holes in Stereo”: “I learned more working at the record store than I ever did in high school.”

Justin Townes Earle’s Single Mothers finds the singer-songwriter weaving his stories through family blues. Its stars dwell on broken families and empty homes, the goodbyes and animosities of those unfortunate people on the losing end of a “Hungry Heart” walk-out and the memories they left behind in an attic’s picture-drawer. Their melancholy, obnoxiously literal at times (see “Today and a Lonely Night”), is given a surprisingly warm partner in Earle’s Americana.

There are plenty of parallels to draw between Jack White and Kanye West. They are two artists the press has recently criticized—and each took time to mention those recent qualms during their performances at Bonnaroo—and they are two artists who continue to innovate, collaborate and alienate within their respective genres. With the headlining slots on Friday and Saturday, West and White both touted their statuses as rockstars during their sets, which got us wondering: who’s really the rockstar?

Punk music usually revolves around protest, rebellion and fast-paced, mosh-inciting style. Therefore, the scene can sometimes be written off as off-putting and relentless. However, Ex-Cult’s sophomore release, Midnight Passenger, shows clear signs of maturity and musical depth in the youthful neo-punk act’s career. The gang somehow found time between touring the States relentlessly to write some new material. Instead of lazily recreating their first release, the band decided to expand their sound, experimenting with new genres, guitar effects and musical depth. Unlike most punk bands that strive to embody the most powerful, brutal and noisy sound, Ex-Cult looks to refine their sound in a way that shows they aren’t a one-dimensional band.

The exterior is painted in an array of pastels—rose, sky blue, sea foam green—and one window facing Dickinson Street reads in paint, “Evolution Arts Collective.” Inside, a series of white-walled rooms adorned with art leads to a back-room studio floored with concrete, housing a kind of scaffolding.

“All of these people, none of them give a damn for me,” lead singer Cameron Neal cries on “Let Go.” While this song doesn't come around until the end of Fear in Bliss, much of Horse Thief's second album echoes that sentiment—overcoming abandon and a perceived meaninglessness are rung throughout Fear in Bliss. What's remarkable is these feelings aren't lost in what, sonically, radiates with uplifting folk rock and jangle pop embellishments.

The headlines are Northwestern University and unionized college sports, but the storyline is universal and highlights an opportunity for us all. Forget the fretting pundits who conjure up endless what ifs. The truth is, the football players at Northwestern understand the power of collective action and the meaning of a fair deal. We’d all be better off understanding the same.
