As summer approaches, students will be moving out of the dorms
to either head home or sublet over the next few months. During this
time, the dorms are filled with a wide range of inhabitants, many
of whom are unknown to the student body.

It is time to rethink our image of UW-Madison. The leftist haven
of the 1960s and '70s is no more. Instead, the school is a roughly
accurate representation of the state-minus minorities and poor
people, of course. When you take minorities and poor people out of
the mix, the reasons for UW to be a center-right community only
increase.

For those of us who are graduating in two weeks, the days seem
filled with ambiguity. There are those who look forward to
commencement with anticipation, secure in a future they've earned
and cannot wait to gain access to. For others who are just now
coming to the realization that a political science degree doesn't
guarantee them the seven-figure salary coming out of college they
were hoping for, time can not move slowly enough. Some still get
teary eyed each time they hear \Varsity"" at any given sporting
event, and others just want to curl up in a ball and pull their
hair out when the band strikes up ""If You Want To Be a Badger.""

What began as an initiative to save tax dollars for prisons has
become a potentially major headache for UW students. Due to the
success of prisons that do not purchase foods together in bulk,
Gov. Doyle felt that implementing a similar plan in the UW System
would allow for the same control and a decreased budget. However,
the Wisconsin Union does not function on state tax dollars and
receives no revenue from food and retail operations but instead
receives contributions from alumni to maintain its facilities and
programs. Therefore, changing vendors at the Union as Doyle has
proposed would save absolutely no money for the state.

Many students seeking to avoid contact with UW-Madison police
officers may only worry about hiding open intoxicants and loud
music.

Finals are upon us; impending doom is less than a week away.
During such times of crisis, it can be just as easy to reach for a
bag of chips or cookies as it is to lug out that twenty-pound
physics book. Crunching on junk food, however, will not only add
weight to the waistline, it will agitate your nervousness and
increase your stress even more.

East of the Capitol lies a new pizzeria named Roman Candle, at
1054 Williamson St. Though only open for four weeks, it is stuffed
full of great food, good company and a friendly, laid-back
caf??-style environment with good home-cooking.

Anyone who thinks humans don't hibernate should really visit
Madison in April. Every year around this time, Madison thaws from
its winter malaise and the city's waking college population seems
to double while its smiles seem to triple, as young men's fancies
turn from skirt-chasing to mini-skirt-chasing. But along with this
youthful springtime glee emerges a far more shadowy annual
occurrence:

Many consider UW-Madison to be a \liberal"" school, possibly
leading some to consider the campus to be non-religious as well.
Nevertheless, what makes UW-Madison different from smaller,
religious-oriented schools like Edgewood College is that UW-Madison
does not have an official religion, but rather offers the
opportunity to explore many.

The future of Madison's cityscape became more concrete Monday
night when two major construction projects received approval from
the city's Plan Commission. The demolition of the house at 353 W.
Mifflin St. and Ogg Hall were both approved on consent. No
additional commentary from the projects' respective parties was
required by the commission.

No St. Patrick's Day would be complete without some good,
old-fashioned dancing. When alcohol and good company combine,
someone will be doing a jig and waving a glass before morning.
Whether caught up in the wonderful energy of a classic Irish
drinking song or another track that simply sings the praises of
everyone's favorite intoxicant, something about the holiday
particularly demands good music. The Daily Cardinal offers up some
suggested listening for your drunken St. Patrick's Day
debauchery.

\As a freshman I came and lived in the dorms as most people do,
and also like most freshmen do, made the mistake of setting up
housing [for sophomore year] the first day you could sign a lease.
I ended up living with a bunch of other random kids from the dorms
in this cramped house,"" UW-Madison senior Megan Lipke said.

Dan the freshman likes doing it on the bathroom floor. Sleeping,
not banging. He longs for the high school days when he would wake
up in the early morning and cuddle on the cold tile before school.
Unfortunately, Dan hasn't found the same comforting toiletside
reflection time in the southeast dorms. Maybe you should move to
The Towers, Dan. Or... maybe not.
