On March 1, the University of Wisconsin Faculty Senate passed a resolution urging the UW Foundation to divest from fossil fuel companies. But, before we take a victory lap, let’s flash back and remember that a similar effort failed in 2014 because it was too ‘divisive.’

“Supernova” is an ode to the things that we live for. In fact, the core of “Ode on Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood” by William Wordsworth, a classic example of an actual ode, is remarkably similar to what “Supernova” is about. The first stanza reads as follows:

On Jan. 6, 2021, insurrectionists stormed the United States Capitol in Washington D.C., as Donald Trump’s loss to President-elect Joe Biden was being finalized through the certification of each state’s electoral college votes. The domestic terrorists smashed windows, stole and even killed as lawmakers hung onto their lives precariously until the originally tame response to the rioters shifted to something more assertive. There were white supremacists dressed in vile “camp Auschwitz” garb and carrying Confederate flags. Indeed, this was the first time the flag had breached into the Capitol in the context of insurrection — having previously only been in the Capitol as part of Mississippi’s old state flag that was replaced by a new one in November. Such a feat had not been accomplished even during the Civil War.

There’s real excitement in movies with a female lead. Very honestly, I’m more drawn to things that show women doing cool stuff than I am to watching male characters talk over each other for two hours. If I wanted to witness that, I would just leave my apartment.

If the last four years of American political theatrics have taught us anything, it is that politicians and their kin are often made out to be celebrities, and their supporters are willing to defend their every move by mudslinging at opponents. The cult-like devotion of Trump supporters is likely to persist long into the future of the Republican party. Anyone remotely critical of their leader is immediately labeled communist or socialist, to the point that these words no longer seem to hold meaning. Ad hominem responses are rife in political discourse on social media, and the most die-hard Trump supporters deal almost exclusively in them. However, this is all well documented. Those on the receiving end of the abuse, however, do not receive nearly as much attention, when they probably should.

Eighty-six percent of all division one public schools require journalists to reach out to their athletic departments in order to interview an athlete. Yes, even Sports Illustrated has to go through Wisconsin Athletics in order to talk to Graham Mertz.

Finally! After two decades in filmmaking and the digital outbreak of the Black Lives Matter movement, it seems as though Pixar has finally responded to the cries and voices of those who have been silenced for years.

What genre comes to your mind when asked to think of love songs? Maybe radio pop, with an earworm for a hook and catchy production. Or maybe something more singer-songwriter, an instrumentally sparse ballad that dramatically lays out a tragic story. You could’ve even thought outside the box and went with emo rock, which often has a focus on a depressingly hopeless sound conveyed through whiny vocals. But even further outside the box, hiding in plain sight, is the hip-hop love song. Often overlooked and criminally underrated, the best hip-hop love songs demonstrate both musical and lyrical mastery, but with a more laid back style. They provide a unique lens on the topic of love and the emotions and situations that come with it, incorporating humorous undertones and witty lines.

Everywhere I go on Twitter, I see a lot of talk about the stock market. It has been inescapable for the last few days. Since my early childhood, I have found the business section of newspapers the most nauseating. It’s not like I have a fear or hatred of math or do not understand the basic concept of profit and loss. I just found it rather muddling early on. As I grew older, I began looking further into how Wall Street worked and right from the get go, it felt morally questionable — in addition to still being quite muddling. My feelings haven’t changed since.

On New Years Eve 2020, it was announced that the legendary hip-hop artist Daniel Dumile, better known by his main alias MF Doom, had passed away. Doom, 49 when he died, was older than other recently deceased rappers. Pop Smoke was only 20, while Juice WRLD was 21. But if pop culture was riveted by the deaths of those two up-and-coming rap phenoms, MF Doom’s passing should send seismic waves through the artistic world. Doom’s influence not just on hip-hop but on all music cannot be, but so frequently is, understated.
