HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL-Disney Channel Original Movie "High School Musical" tells the story of two high school students - Troy (Zac Efron), a popular basketball player and Gabriella (Vanessa Anne Hudgens), a shy, brainy newcomer - who share a secret passion for singing. When these two seemingly polar opposites decide to join forces and go out for the lead roles in the school musical, it wreaks havoc on East High's rigid social order. But by defying expectations and pursuing their dreams, Troy and Gabriella inspire other students to go public with some surprising hidden talents of their own. "High School Musical" premieres FRIDAY, JANUARY 20 (8:00 p.m., ET/PT) on Disney Channel.

Fans of Los Angeles-based musician Alfred Darlington,
a.k.a Daedelus, are quick to emphasize
the DJ's continual defiance of genre. He mixes elements of jazz,
rock, dubstep, film clips and ambient noise—critics
claim he mixes with abandon for an eclectic repertoire. Whether you
believe that or not, the trend of listen-ability is one he fully
continues in Bespoke, a Ninja Tune release that exemplifies
Daedelus at his best and most controversial.

Sean Daley, better known as Slug, is a storyteller. He and his
producer Ant, make up the hip-hop duo Atmosphere. On their 2010
double-EP To All My Friends, Blood Makes The Blade Holy,
Slug doesn't rap to encourage a behavior change or impart a good
moral, but rather talks about what he knows. Every track on this EP
was simple; Atmosphere created a glimmer of hope for its fans
looking to innovative future albums.

After four days of restricted access to the Capitol and a three day
hearing challenging it, Dane County Circuit Court Judge John Albert
issued a permanent injunction forcing the Department of
Administration to open doors to the public and the remaining
overnight protesters to evacuate.

This was the second year that the Sundance Film Festival featured
the NEXT program, a category for extremely low-budget films,
intended to give burgeoning filmmakers an opportunity to shine the
spotlight on their labors of love. One of the films I saw at this
year's festival in the NEXT program was ""Bellflower."" The movie
didn't win any awards, and I wouldn't say it was one of the best
films at the festival, but it was one of the most memorable. It was
incredibly innovative and intriguing and helped its rag-tag group
of creators garner some much-deserved attention.

Making a movie about the life of a great artist is a big
responsibility. Some have done so successfully: Vincente Minnelli's
""Lust for Life,"" a film about the relationship between Vincent
Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin, is considered by many to be the best
film about an artist ever made. Others have not faired so well.
""Factory Girl"" tells the story of Andy Warhol's muse, Edie
Sedgwick, and was reviewed by many as shallow.

When ""Teach Me How to Bucky"" played on the big screen for the
first time at the Minnesota Homecoming football game, I cheered and
applauded in joy at this affirmation of just how wonderful my
school is. It was clear that the thousands of other students felt
similarly as we tightened our bonds in a sea of red school
spirit.

As Lathrop Hall, one of the most historically important
structures on campus turns one-hundred years old, it seems a
suitable time to reflect on the history, comical ironies and
astounding change which has surrounded the record of women on
campus.

Rock shows and record stores. That is what touring was all about
according to Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore in ""I Need That
Record!,"" a documentary that was streamed on the Pitchfork website
on the heels of Record Store Day. It profiles various record stores
as they shut down and the audiophiles who depended on them for
sustenance, and interviews industry veterans for perspectives
reaching back to the early prominence of the recording industry. It
laments the decline of independent music stores and the creative
side of the industry. Yet out of all of the dejected faces seen,
hope can be found when the undertones of those laments point to
industry-defying artists of today.

Once upon a time, pop and rock musicians told stories with their
music, telling tales of yellow submarines and tambourine men, but,
that was once upon a time. Now we're fed clever hooks and redundant
rhymes in hopes that the teens and twenty-somethings will dance and
sway along. It'd be nice to say that Aqualung defies this trend,
but with Magnetic North, that does not seem to be the
case.

Someone once said that college is an adventure and only you hold
the map that shows the path to success. That ""someone"" was an
ex-con turned motivational speaker who completed two hours of his
court-ordered community service by speaking at my eighth grade
graduation. Despite his teardrop tattoo and missing fingers, I took
the advice of Henry ""T-Bone"" Watkins to heart; he was genuine and
emphatic and said anyone who didn't listen to his advice ""IS GONNA
GET STABBED.""

Today, tomorrow and Saturday the Madison Museum of Contemporary
Art will host an event that, despite being an annual occurrence,
has a relatively small profile amongst even the film-savviest
Madisonians: The Romanian Film Festival. The emergence of the
so-called Romanian new wave, a young cinema born nearly 30 years
after similar movements popped up throughout eastern Europe, is one
of the more curious developments in recent film history. Whether
""new wave"" is the best name for this movement remains open for
debate; the first film screening in the festival is a French
documentary, ""The New Wave of the Romanian Cinema"" (screens 6:30
p.m. Thursday), whose title seems to imply that the movement itself
has embraced its contentious moniker.
