Before I get too far into this topic, I have to admit something
to all of you: I am absolutely, no-holds-barred 100 percent the
worst horror movie viewer of all time. I can't stand getting
scared. Even the mildest of scary movies leave me covering my ears,
squinting my eyes and praying for the film to be done already. The
only time I force myself to watch horror movies is when they seem
ready to become a cultural hallmark, or when they are so critically
acclaimed (""The Sixth Sense,"" ""Let the Right One In"") that I
can't truly call myself a movie expert without seeing them.

I've never really understood country music. I'm not exactly sure
what a honky-tonk bar is, but I'm pretty sure that if one burned
down, nobody would care. However, recently I was lucky enough to
receive a sneak peek into the gritty underworld of country music
and its stars.

Eminem: I said I?m sorry Mama. I never meant to hurt you. I
never meant to make you cry, because tonight, I?m downloading your
new album.

I used to sleep with him every night. He was warm, approachable,
soft to the touch. He'd lie across my bed and gaze into my eyes
with a longing usually reserved for a platter of chocolate chip
cookies after dinner. He was my confidante, my companion, my second
self. He was... Boopsie, my stuffed animal.

Best known for their film ""Once,"" The Swell Season maintain
their familiar emotive approach to music for their third album,
Strict Joy.

Max isn't like other kids. He's introverted, aggressive and
moody. Despite learning advanced astronomy in class, he still hides
in blanket forts in his room, issuing commands to his army of
stuffed animals. He moves from happily throwing snowballs to crying
silently at his departing sister to destroying her room in a
furious tantrum. And despite this, he is a king.

I hear a lot about gay rights as a student in Madison but the
discussion is almost exclusively one- sided. The newspapers, the
administration, multiple campus groups—everyone seems to be pushing
for equal recognition of same-sex partnerships here at the UW.
While we live in a hotbed of activism and support for homosexuals,
our state did ban gay marriage. Not in the legislature but in a
public vote: no matter how loud Madison cries, the silent majority
closed the books on this issue in Wisconsin.

A shamelessly no-holds-barred grandiosity, Warm Heart of Africa
isn't the kind of debut we expect these days. The Very Best make no
claims toward authenticity, but their keen devotion to sincerity
makes for a refreshingly pure album dutifully laying the groundwork
for impressively realized innovation.

It's Saturday night and your date is off to a good start. You've
already gone to dinner; you've even held hands. But it's still
early and you're not ready for the night to end. Thankfully Madison
has several late-night date bars, all conveniently located in the
King Street area near the picturesque Capitol, that are sure to
make your date as pleasurable as possible.

I am one of a few UW-Madison undergraduate students who can
personally testify to the notion that Halloween in this city ain't
what it used to be.

Once the previews for the Nora Ephron
novel-turned-movie, ""Julie and Julia"" hit the TV, I knew I was a
goner. A self-proclaimed food enthusiast who likes to make as many
goodies from scratch as possible, I tend to tackle projects in the
kitchen that take me hours, even days, to complete. Therefore it's
no surprise that I really empathized and connected with Julie, a
woman coping with post-9/11 stress as a customer support
representative for the New York City Building Planning
Commission.

As another anniversary of the mass slaughter on September 11,
2001 comes to pass, the shrill cries of nationalism, coupled with
the genuine and disingenuous sympathy for the victims, make their
way into the national discussion once again, even if the volume is
slightly less amplified with each passing year. All of the official
quarters pay their respects to the horrific happenings of that day
eight years ago —as they should. Last Friday, the College
Republicans and College Democrats held a vigil on Bascom Hill
during which they planted American flags and sang the National
Anthem. Undoubtedly, these same groups held near identical
gatherings on universities throughout the country. This kind of
thing is to be expected—it's simply the thing to do.

By now, I'm sure you all know some of the major Madison
hotspots, including the Memorial Terrace, Bascom Hill and wherever
I may be at a given time on campus. However, I'm willing to give
away some of the lesser-known hotspots on campus free of charge!

The hubbub surrounding President Obama's Sept. 8 speech to
America's school kids has been ridiculously overblown, to say the
least.

Entering my final year here at Madison, there are some
things that just don't shock me like they did freshman year.
Three-story beer bongs, crying freshmen, Evangelicals, Harvest
Fest; it was all crazy for a year or two, but somewhere toward the
end of junior year I became habituated to seeing a guy play guitar
while standing on his head.

A strong hand planted stiffly on my shoulder and sent shivers
through my body, freezing every muscle as I stood on my host
family's front lawn in Ethiopia. I slowly turned as my eyes
traveled up a large arm and over to the other arm, which was
grasping an AK-47. I looked up at his face as he glanced back at
two other armed men and his lips parted into a grin.
