In light of their upcoming show, The Daily Cardinal had a chat with Matt Nuernberger, electric guitarist and keyboardist for the Pigpen Theatre Company, a theater troupe-cum-folk band with origins in Pittsburgh and New York City. When The Cardinal caught up with Nurenberger, he and the other members of the band were in Austin, Texas for the South by Southwest festival, a first time experience for the whole band.

Correction 3/14/2014: A previous version of this story stated that Chancellor Rebecca Blank said the university was discussing a tuition hike for out-of-state students, which would be accompanied by more financial assistance. However, in the chat, Blank was referencing the difference between University of Michigan’s out-of-state tuition and UW-Madison’s. Blank did not say she wanted to raise or was discussing raising UW-Madison’s out-of-state tuition. We regret the error.

Anyone who decided to try out the Internet this past week likely stumbled upon the popular “Twitch Plays Pokemon” stream that just finished up a few days ago. Although it may have taken over everyone’s lives and provided the one reality show that actually seems worthwhile, the dramatic conclusion merely spawned a fresh stream of “Pokemon Crystal.”

Walking to a medical school admissions interview and asking myself why I wanted to be a physician, I was unexpectedly hailed by a man walking counter to me and, I suppose, asking himself if I would stop. I stopped. The man asked me if I was going somewhere.

It was a night like any other. I wrapped myself in a blanket burrito, took to the television and traversed the channels until I happened upon HBO’s latest endeavor—an eight-episode collection called "True Detective." Its menacing black claws had me ensnared by the end of the first episode and with each passing week, they dig deeper and deeper into my psyche. If I could go back in time, maybe I wouldn’t have chosen this path—alas, there is no turning back.

Let’s play a game. Imagine I walk up to you, a typical 20-year-old college student, and introduce myself. Moving past the niceties of introductions you inquire what my interests are. “I’m a gamer,” I reply casually. How do you respond? Do you think of me as childish? The word “gamer” has acquired a vile connotation in most people’s vernacular nowadays. I hate being embarrassed to associate myself with my passion.

The Bassment doesn’t quite live up to its name. Not only does its claustrophobic enclosure constrict and warp acoustics beyond measure (bass especially), it’s also crammed in an attic. Still, the new venue—dreamt up and operated in the spirit of similar DIY venues all across the country—has a distinct charm to it that no degree of accurate nomenclature could ever bring. Sitting unassumingly at a redacted address on a redacted street (sorry, you’ll have to facebook message the owners for the location), when I walked in for the venue’s christening show Wednesday night there was nothing to indicate the beat up living quarters were housing a show that night, aside from a self-made poster taped to the door. Not until you ventured to the attic to find a group of 15 some people (which later swelled to around 50 or so) chatting, laughing, drinking beer and eating homemade cupcakes, surrounded by streamers dangling from the ceiling and even a disco ball.

If you look far and wide, in the crevices and basements and pockets of places you’d pass by otherwise, you’ll find these neighborhood spots that are like none other. If you take a chance on them and make the long trek, you’ll find yourself going back for more.

In trying to think of a relevant issue my student readers would enjoy, I realized scoping current events for something I could form an opinion about just wasn’t cutting it. Instead, I chose to look to the expert —myself and my peers. We’re the experts. We know what is relevant to students because we are the students. Not that this is a normal occurrence in our apartment, but last night my roommates and I engaged in a conversation that was extremely relevant and inspired this column today.
