A new report from the Brookings Institute shows public funding for clean energy has—and will continue to—plummet from a high point in 2009. Clean energy has made strides in the past few years by adding jobs in a recession and making clean technology more efficient and affordable. But a national emphasis on budget austerity will contribute to a falling rate of subsidies for clean-energy companies. The federal government needs to learn from Solyndra’s bankruptcy, which left the government on the hook for $535 million, instead of walking away from clean energy as a whole.

Surrounded by an endless expanse of sand, you wake up in a foreign world with only a shimmering mountaintop looming ominously in the distance. Devoid of options, you begin your journey towards a goal that could mark either a sanctuary or a false hope. Suddenly, a bright figure appears in the distance.

Since I’ve come to Madison it’s seemed to me that there was a concerted effort, whether conscious or subconscious, to reign in the school’s traditional character. I’m sure many of us who are Wisconsin residents have heard about Madison, or some sort of UW history, like I have. My mom and some relatives have either graduated from UW-Madison or at least attended it at some point in their lives. The infamous Mifflin Street Block Party, whether some people want it gone or not, is indistinguishable from the university’s public image, something that the majority of the community would agree on.

After exploring the dainty side of life—a meal on proper dinner etiquette—in my last column, this week is all about the wacky and wonderful world of testosterone. That’s right kids: I got juiced at the SERF. Veni, vidi, vici. Or, you know, something like that.

At CollegeFashionista,
we Style Gurus get the fabulous opportunity to report on the street
style on the UW-Madison campus daily, which all of us desperately
love, but we never really get a chance to share just how cool our
fellow Style Gurus are.

In a world where most students' priorities are grades and beer,
one group of students is solving a problem nobody cares about with
a bold solution no one on campus asked for.

Postpone those ""Halloween,"" ""Friday the 13th"" and other various
horror movie marathons just another week longer (except for maybe
""Hocus Pocus,"" since we all know that's getting
watched more than once anyway). The WUD Film committee
has got some flicks coming up for which you will not want to keep
your eyes covered—though tightly squeezing the hand next to you may
still be permissible.

In a world of increasingly pedestrian and piddling hip-hop,

Despite the major movie studios' absolute infatuation with 3-D (or
perhaps, more accurately, the inflated box office hauls that
inevitably accompany 3-D) it seems like its popularity among the
general public has once again peaked and is beginning to wane, just
like it did 50 years ago when the iconic red-and-blue glasses were
still in use.

The Associated Students of Madison is having a rough month. Since
new leadership took over in the summer, ASM gave birth
to a somewhat heretical student government and in turn received
harsh but justified criticisms from members of the 17th session.
Former ASM Chair Brandon Williams even tweeted, ""It
might just be me, but the @asmstudentgovt is starting
to look and feel a lot like the WISPIRG office. Take
it or leave it."" While bold, the tweet is probably
true.

Flashback to Summer 2006: on the west side of Wisconsin Rapids,
Angelica and James crawl around the carpeted basement floor of
James's mom's house, picking up shards of glass. James' hands shake
and blood drips from where he squeezed the glass too hard. ""What
happened just now, James?"" Angelica says. ""What are you thinking
about?""

With the race for the Republican presidential nomination heating
up, the past few weeks have seen extensive campaigning and
passionate debates that have shed more light on the contenders.
Watching contender U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann,
R-Minn., is like revisiting the 2008 presidential
election.

When Rep. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis., announced her
intentions to run for U.S. Senate, it excited and
satisfied many liberal Wisconsinites. Baldwin is an
ideologically consistent, progressive public servant whose years of
service to Madison and the nation have advanced the causes of
LGBT rights, non-profit health care and peace-oriented
foreign policy. And, perhaps not surprisingly for a Dane County
representative, Baldwin was rated in 2011 as the most liberal
member of the U.S. House of Representatives by The
National Journal— a distinction which will entice voters in
Wisconsin's 2nd and 4th congressional districts and students here
on campus.
