Downtown Madison has a new business establishment that is getting national attention. The Snuggle House been talked about on “The Today Show” and in New York Magazine among other outlets and was subject to relentless skepticism about the services’ platonic nature. In the weeks since it opened, the House has proven it’s serious about touch therapy, and it appears that clients are showing up to partake, for the small fee of $60 an hour.

When I imagined my time abroad in Paris, it was all butterflies and rainbows—or rather, it was all warm baguettes and handsome strangers. Although the warm baguettes and handsome strangers turned out to be true, along with them came a barrage of things I hadn’t expected at all. To save any future Badgers who go abroad the trouble, here are five lessons I learned the hard way:

In a peculiar line-item in his 2013 budget last fall, Mayor Paul Soglin proposed the city give less funding to the Overture Center, and instead bankroll an arts festival and a promotional music video.

This past weekend, I had the pleasure of traveling a good ten hours back and forth from Madison to Minneapolis. Although I got off these trips relatively scot-free, that has certainly not been the case for most of my travels.

In a town like Madison, we do a lot of moving. Once we get tired of one place (or run out of rent money, let’s be honest), we’re off to the next shitty hole-in-the-wall apartment our parents kind of want to cry about when they visit. Considering how mobile we, as a student body, are, you’d think that we’d be used to it by now. I’ve found this is certainly not the case.

Passing by the historic doors of The Majestic Theatre, one would not have guessed the venue was temporarily turned into a place of worship last night. The visiting deity was Lil’ B, known by his avid followers as The Based God. Needless to say, there were a lot of hands raised to the heavens and pressed together in prayer (an interesting juxtaposition against the actual definition of “BASED”).

I’m beginning to think that I cannot attend a music festival unless it is blisteringly hot outside. After the infamous heat of Tennessee, Austin and California where other popular festivals are held, I was looking forward to the hip-hop festival in the cool, early-summer weather of my Minnesotan homeland. However, the scorching heat present at this years’ Soundset festival wasn’t enough to stop the Rhymesayers crew from continuing their tradition last Sunday, May 27 on the plains of Shakopee, MN, with the help of nearly 20,000 avid fans.

Last week I attended a lecture by Stephen Jarchow, the executive producer of the film “Gods and Monsters.” The talk, hosted by the English department, was advertised as something that will reassure you “why an English major is really important.”

Were you one of the lucky seniors in high school that looked at their future Badger roommate on Facebook and shuddered with fear at what lay ahead? Or, better yet, did you arrive on campus, fresh-faced and ready to begin drinking (ahem, studying), only to realize that your dorm life was going to be a living hell? Enter, “The Female Odd Couple,” a comedic production that speaks to the hearts and minds of anyone who has ever had a bad roommate.

On a campus as large as UW-Madison’s, finding synchronicity and cohesion can at times be difficult. Performance has always had the intrinsic quality of counteracting that disconnect, and arguably no group on campus has worked harder to put on an incredible performance than the African Student Association (ASA).

The Second City, a premier comedy troupe based in Chicago, is a verified comedian-machine. With the likes of Bill Murray, Tina Fey, Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, John Belushi and Mike Myers as alumni, their tendency to produce top-of-the-line comedians is undeniable. On March 24, the current members of Second City took the stage at the Overture Center with their Laugh Out Loud tour, and gave audiences a glimpse into the future of comedy.

In the nearly-85-degree heat of the day, we decided it was only fair to dance to some astro-pop beach rock music under some trees in a backyard at the Brooklyn Vegan showcase. Enter, Django Django, a Jestons-meets-Beach-Boys threesome that is perfect for summer jamming. Afterwards we caught Tennis, a band whose frontwoman gives female rockers a good name. Her simultaneously strong and soothing vocals are the perfect compliment to the danceable rock group at her back.

Great bass is like great sex—the intense, rhythmic build up eventually comes to an immensely gratifying release in the drop. Lucky for our libidos, there was plenty of bass to go around last night during the shows of AraabMUZIK and Machinedrum. Machinedrum performed in the sweaty basement of a dive bar, and we have never seen a crowd respond so passionately: if you are a fan of dubstep or dropping it low, he is a must-listen.

The thing about South by Southwest is that there is so much going on all across the entire city it is difficult to plan for anything; hence, our new vow to go with the flow. We’ve read several “What you need to know about SXSW” tips and heard from veterans of the event, and they all tell you to give up on whatever you’re planning. However, we didn’t realize the truth of this until Wednesday.

Tuesday marked the first official day of the music portion of South by Southwest. The shows don’t start until the evening, but when they do get going, they don’t stop for quite some time. Before the music started, we had to pick up our wristbands in order to attend shows. While we were waiting, we ran into Cults, Yellow Ostrich and Brother Ali. We were starstruck, to say the least.

With Bob Dylan and SBTRKT blaring (yes, we are an eclectic bunch) we set off for the 20-hour long trek to Austin, Texas, for South By Southwest. Despite the regular ups and downs of a college road trip—speeding ticket and cat-infested-couch-surfer-lodging included—we arrived successfully and began navigating the streets of Austin and the complexities of the festival itself.

It will be one of the great gatherings, a unification to
remember. Think Wilson and Churchill, Batman and Robin, Kanye and
Jay-Z...well it may not be quite that epic, but this Saturday, Feb.
18 at the Wisconsin Union Theater, the a capella choirs of
UW-Madison will come together to bring you a sonic treat that hits
close to home.
