I was walking home one day when someone yelled \Hey homo, nice
shirt."" At first, I was mad but then I realized that I could see
myself saying the same thing'say, 10 years ago when I was 11. So,
maybe the guy was not a complete jerk and homophobe, but just had
some growing up to do. The kind of growing up most of us go through
before high school, but hey, there are slow kids in every class.
And then it hit me, in a few weeks he will be gone. Woo-hoo!

If you are reading this, I feel sorry for you. Look out the
window. For the first time in months, it's nice out. Really, really
nice. So nice, in fact, that you shouldn't be inside sitting
through a dull lecture or pounding away on a paper. You should be
outside, enjoying the weather. Throwing a baseball. Grilling
something. Salmon maybe. Sounds good to me.

I saw a rock star last weekend. It was a pretty good concert,
complete with lots of flashy lights and eager fans. The rock star
played some songs off his new album. He also did a few of those
rock star jumps, where the momentum of a particularly fierce guitar
riff picks the musician up into the air. He struck some nice poses
too, looking for all the world like he was playing in some big
arena instead of a medium sized club. The bassist kept jerking his
head like an ostrich on speed, while the hipster drummer stayed in
the back and tried to look cool.

From the caf?? owner whose \fresh-squeezed"" orange juice comes
out of a can to the diplomat who assures the Kremlin that U.S.
plans to nuke Russia are ""only a contingency,"" lying is
everywhere these days. I am not just talking about polite, social
lies like ""it's not crooked"" or ""you're a good friend."" I mean
blatant, complete falsehoods that can go on for weeks, even years,
at a time.

I have not been sleeping much lately. It's not like I don't try
to go to sleep. I climb into bed and set up the bedclothes but
something always stops me from sleeping.

For those of us who don't have cable, TV is a wasteland. Sure,
there's \The Simpsons"" and ""Temptation Island II,"" but most
programming is unvarnished crap along the lines of ""That '80s
Show."" With this in mind, it was a joy to discover a wealth of
entertaining TV just a click away. Channel 47, the Three Angels
Broadcasting Network, just might be the best thing on TV.

College students are a pretty unhealthy group of people. We stay
up all night and wake up in time for morning classes (sometimes).
Breakfast is often skipped, dinner is often pizza. We eat far too
many mood-altering substances and not nearly enough bran. We are a
constantly told that we are at a higher risk for everything from
binge drinking to meningitis.

This is the strangest time of the year. The fountain on Library
Mall has been turned off. The trees have already lost their leaves.
But it is easy to ignore these signs of the coming winter.

I generally do not consider myself a 'high stress' kind of
person. I mean, I take it easy, go to class when I feel like it and
try not to let things bother me. Hell, I slept through the MCAT.

Today, the 10th of October, is 'Metric Day.' It makes a sick
sort of sense if you think about it, that the 10th day of the 10th
month of the year would be singled out for worship by a mass of
troglodytes who writhe and gyrate at the altar of the number
10.

There was a large package stuffed into our mailbox and it was
addressed to me. I was pretty excited'a big package has to be
something good, right?

According to UW-Madison officials, this year's freshman class
could be the largest ever, with over 6,000 freshly-scrubbed faces
dutifully trudging off to overcrowded survey classes and boasting
about their 'sophomore standing.'

I received an e-mail from my editor Stella, essentially saying,
'Mike, you've got to write 200 to 300 words to convince people to
