While the UW softball team may be getting most of the attention in sports this spring, there is another team roaming the diamond right now and they are turning some heads nationally.
Women's junior defender Carla MacLeod was named second-team All-American Monday, according to the American Hockey Coaches Association. MacLeod was also honored to the second-team all-Western Collegiate Hockey Assoication earlier this season.

It was a weekend the Badgers had been waiting for. But with Wisconsin's recent lack of wins, who would have expected the excitement that was to ensue?
There is little doubt who the top team in the nation is right now, or even for most of the year.?? The North Dakota Fighting Sioux have been ranked No. 1 in the nation for an outstanding 13 weeks in a row and are showing no sign of slowing down. Of course, when you consider all the weapons that the Fighting Sioux have at their disposal, it is no surprise what the team has accomplished this year.
With the end of the season approaching and some tough opponents left on the schedule, a lull is not what the Wisconsin men's hockey team needs right now. The Badgers' slump may look worse than it really is, considering it has come right after a 15-game unbeaten streak. Nevertheless, Wisconsin has had a 3-5-2 record and three losses in a row since the streak and has been missing big chances to close out games.
The 2002-'03 year was a breakout year for many freshmen on the Badger men's hockey team. One of which was Badger center A.J. Degenhardt. Degenhardt, a LaCrosse, Wis. native, scored 12 points in his first season as a Badger while playing for the team he watched and dreamed of as a kid. Now a sophomore, Degenhardt is primed to improve on his freshman campaign and, hopefully, help the Badgers attain Western Collegiate Hockey Association supremacy and also get back into the postseason.
The Wisconsin men's hockey team took a break from conference play last weekend with hopes of starting another winning streak. However, a lack of goals and penalty killing only allowed the Badgers to salvage one point against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in a 2-2 tie Saturday night and a 3-1 loss Sunday night.
It was too little, too late for the Wisconsin Badger women's basketball team (2-2) as their late-game rally was snuffed in a 64-58 loss to the Western Illinois Westerwinds (2-2) Monday at the Kohl Center. The Badgers cut an eight-point Westerwind lead down to two points with just 2:21 remaining in the game, but Western Illinois never let the Badgers get any closer and eventually walked away with the victory.
The middle of November signifies a number of things for college football fans and players: The final games of the year, bowl game placement and \Senior Days"" in colleges across the nation. Grateful fans, families, players and coaches pay respect to the graduating seniors that have contributed so much to their football teams over the previous four years. Everyone comes to the realization the seniors will soon play their final games in a college uniform, and possibly their last football games ever.
Most of the energy that the Badgers were missing after the Ohio State game was finally back, especially in senior quarterback Jim Sorgi, after the much-needed bye week last weekend. Unfortunately, their run defense was missing instead.
The Badger men's basketball team had success in recent years in terms of freshmen being asked to perform in their first year. Two years ago, those outstanding freshmen were current juniors Mike Wilkinson and Devin Harris. Last year it was Alando Tucker, a member of the Big Ten all-freshman team, and sixth-man specialist Boo Wade.
For the last two years, the UW men's hockey team has had the luxury of having two goaltenders who could split time in the net for the Badgers. Scott Kabotoff and current junior goaltender Bernd Br??ckler played 20 and 24 games last year, respectively In the 2001-'02 season, they played 24 and 18, respectively. The duo has given Wisconsin the option of using either netminder depending on the situation.
The Wisconsin men's soccer team (1-3 Big Ten, 9-8 overall) took out their second non-conference foe in eight days as they defeated the DePaul Blue Demons (7-8, 3-2 Conference USA) by a score of 2-1 at home last night. The win put the Badgers over .500 for the fourth time this year and also snapped a 3-game winning streak for the Blue Demons.
When the men's hockey team took votes from the players to determine who this year's captain would be, the results were so close between three of the players that it was hard to figure out a clear-cut favorite. So instead, they just chose all three.
While the No. 21 Wisconsin Badgers volleyball team (12-5, 4-2 Big Ten) was able to earn an easy victory Friday night against the Iowa Hawkeyes (5-10, 0-6 Big Ten), it, once again, came up just short Sunday in a five-game loss to the defending Big Ten champion Minnesota Golden Gophers (11-7, 4-2 Big Ten).
After an offseason of weight training and conditioning, the Wisconsin Badgers men's hockey team finally takes to the ice for the first time this weekend. A new and improved Badger team will finally get to see what results their hard work will have in store for them.
The No. 23 Wisconsin Badgers' (10-3 overall, 2-0 Big Ten) volleyball team escaped early deficits in both matches this weekend to come up with wins against the Northwestern Wildcats (9-5 overall, 1-1 Big Ten) Friday and the Illinois Fighting Illini (10-2 overall, 1-1 Big Ten) Saturday.
The Wisconsin Badgers' men's soccer team wanted to make a strong statement going into the Big Ten season and that is exactly what they did. Senior midfielder Erol Goknur had a goal and an assist for the Badgers and freshman goalkeeper Jake Settle notched a shutout in his first career start in place of the injured senior, Eric Hanson as UW (5-5) took out the Illinois-Chicago Flames (5-3) by a score of 2-0 at McClimon Soccer Complex in Madison Wednesday night. Still, the team feels they have some things to work on.
