With the November elections approaching, closely fought races at
every level of Wisconsin politics are heating up. The majority of
political debate has centered on job creation in light of
Wisconsin's 8.1 percent unemployment rate, and the race for
governor is proving no exception. Republican candidate Scott Walker
and Democrat Tom Barrett have centered their campaigns on
increasing employment as a means to improving the economy. Their
plans for doing so, however, are far different.

You refuse to spend New Year's Eve sprawled alone on the couch,
surrounded by empty ice cream cartons and watching a ball drop. You
won't stand in a two-hour line to get into a bar, only to stand in
another line for a drink once inside. And you won't spring for a
$75 bottle of champagne. This New Year's Eve, you're going to a
real party. Heck, you're going to throw the party. But what do you
know about throwing a New Year's party? Nothing. But fear not: The
Cardinal is here to help you throw the New Year's Eve party people
will talk about for years to come.

Maybe your procrastination is forcing you to study for the next
two weeks straight. Or your boss has scheduled you to work

extended family asking you, \What's your major? How old are you,
again?"" for the zillionth time. Whatever the reason, you aren't
going home for Thanksgiving.

Trees are dropping the last of their leaves. Department stores
are flashing with Christmas lights. These are the signs that autumn
is nearing its end, and the holidays are about to begin. And what
would a Thanksgiving dinner be without an apple pie at the end? The
apple is an American favorite. But the apple season is nearing its
close, so apple lovers must act quickly to get that ripe, perfect
fruit.

You can get a burger pretty much anywhere. Fast food restaurants
thaw thousands of burgers a day-even Mexican restaurants are firing
up the grill. In a city where burgers are as commonplace as
panhandlers, what could make a new burger joint any different from
the rest?

What's not to love about the Memorial Union? Those Terrace
chairs. That Rathskeller ale. The smell of the lake mixed with
brats fresh off the grill. Now, as the Memorial Union turns 75
years old, the Wisconsin Union decided to celebrate in true UW
fashion-with Babcock ice cream.

On its surface, the new State Street Meal Plan seems
ideal-instead of eating dorm food, parents put money on a debit
card that is accepted at select restaurants on State Street. The
plan sounds deliciously simple but as the old adage goes, things
are not always what they seem.

This time of year, there isn't much to look forward to in
Madison; the mile-long line at the bookstore, new apartments sans
air conditioning and the hellish reconstruction of Johnson
Street.??But do not fret-our great city has once again prepared a
hearty \welcome back"" party for hungry, perspiring Madisonians
like yourself.

This year more than others in recent memory, the National League
race will be characterized by a rich mixture of old post-season
powers and up and coming franchises.
