The University of Wisconsin-Madison Police Department (UWPD) announced a renewed call for information about a 58-year-old unsolved murder case of a University of Wisconsin-Madison freshman on May 28.
On the morning of May 26, 1968, UW-Madison freshman Christine “Chris” Rothschild was found strangled and stabbed to death next to Sterling Hall. UWPD attempted to solve the case but it was overshadowed due to anti-war protests on campus and no suspects were arrested. This year marks the 58th anniversary of Rothschild’s murder.
The UWPD’s public statement encouraged the public to come forward with any information regarding the murder case.
“Even if your information is insignificant or we believe we are already aware of it, please contact us and allow us to make that determination,” UWPD said in the press release. “Every piece of information counts.”
A classmate and close friend of Rothschild, Linda Schulko, made efforts to push the case onto UWPD by organizing a memorial for Rothschild in 2008. Her efforts later inspired true crime podcast Dakota Spotlight to highlight the case in their 10th season, “You Killed Chris: A Friend’s Fight For Justice.”
UWPD said they have continuously investigated Rothschild’s murder since it occurred, partnering with state and federal law enforcement.
UWPD did not respond to The Daily Cardinal’s inquiry about any progress made towards the investigation.
