University Health Services (UHS) is celebrating Men’s Mental Health Month with a series of events advocating for male students’ mental and physical health.
The month of November is often known as ‘Movember’, a time dedicated to promoting men’s health and breaking stigmas surrounding mental health and masculinity. A recent survey from The Healthy Minds Network reported 31% of college-aged men have said they experienced depression.
To curtail negative stereotypes attributed to men focusing on their own mental health, UHS hosted a panel discussion featuring former Badger Football and Men’s Basketball DJ, DJay Mando, PhD student Devin Henry, Integrated Service Provider Travis Love, Predoctoral Intern Alex Taheri and Nuclear Materials Assistant Professor Charlie Hirst who are all male leaders on campus. Additionally, UHS is holding Barbershop Talks, where students can get a free haircut and talk about their mental health in a supportive setting. Barbershop Talks will be held at the Nicholas Recreation Center on Tuesday Nov. 18 and Wednesday Nov. 19
UHS has also placed posters around campus promoting their events as well as working to destigmatize men crying, among other things.
