University of Wisconsin-Madison Police advised students Monday morning just after 10 a.m. to stay clear of the area around the east side of the UW Arboretum due to a ‘suspicious object’ under investigation.
A bomb squad, part of Dane County’s Hazardous Device Unit, was present on the scene to diffuse any possible threat, but UWPD chief Marc Lovicott confirmed the bomb squad found the object to be an empty, old training device with no explosive power.
In a press conference just after 11 a.m., Lovicott said the training device had been discovered on the boardwalk by a passerby walking through the Arboretum.
As of 11:30 a.m., the area has been cleared for return. In UWPD’s incident report, they urged members of the public to contact local law enforcement to dispose of an object like this rather than leaving it in public so it can be safely disposed of.
