Mayor Rhodes-Conway selects UW alumni as new deputy mayor

Mayor Sataya Rhodes-Conway has selected Reuben Sanon to serve as Deputy Mayor beginning Nov. 2.

Deputy mayors represent and assist the mayor with planning, communication and outreach. Deputies also work with various city departments that pertain to their professional backgrounds.

“Reuben will be a great addition to Team City,” Rhodes-Conway said. “I really like his enthusiasm, background, experiences and love of Madison. I know he will strengthen our resident outreach and engagement efforts to the benefit of the whole city.”

Sanon was previously the Communications and Diversity Strategist in the City of Sun Prairie, where he worked to empower and engage underserved communities. He also served as a Program Director at the Morgridge Center for Public Service, working with students and over 90 community partner organizations in Dane County, Rhodes-Conway said.

“Those experiences and the people I've met through them have prepared me to serve my hometown as the newest deputy mayor working towards a day when access and mobility for our community’s most vulnerable are inherent to the very nature in which we serve as public servants and live as Madisonians,” Sanon stated.

Sanon grew up in Eagle Heights, attended Madison West High School and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2015. He has experience working with nonprofits and in communications and marketing. He speaks both French and Portuguese in addition to English.

His main focus will be connecting marginalized communities in Madison to resources and giving people the power to shape their communities and thrive.

“That’s more important than ever as COVID-19 reshapes our daily lives and as we as a nation and local community grapple with our deeply ingrained inequities, systemic oppression and history of violence that have shaped the very land we stand on,” Sanon said.

The Mayor’s office employs four-full time deputy mayors. Sanon is filling one of the vacancies left by Leslie Orrantia and Cam McClay, who announced their resignations this past June to pursue other endeavors.

Sanon will begin on Nov. 2 with a salary of about $104,415.
