Washington Monthly names UW-Madison a top university

UW-Madison bolstered its spot on Washington Monthly magazine’s list of top universities in the country.

The university now ranks 21st nationally — a step up from its spot at number 23 in Washington Monthly’s 2019 National University Rankings.

Washington Monthly’s annual College Guide and Rankings uses a particular methodology to determine the ranks of all 4-year colleges and universities.

“Our rankings consist of three equally weighted portions: social mobility, research and community and national service,” said the editors of Washington Monthly. “This means that top-ranked colleges needed to be excellent across the full breadth of our measures, rather than excelling in just one.”

The Badger community can rejoice in its institution’s merits. “UW-Madison ranked 16th overall in research, fifth in research expenditures, third in the number of science and engineering PhDs awarded, 21st in the number of faculty who are members of the National Academies relative to the number of full-time faculty, and 36th in the number of faculty receiving prestigious awards relative to the number of full-time faculty,” said University Relations Specialist Käri Knutson.

Washington Monthly magazine ranks UW-Madison 12th in relation to other public universities.

Times Higher Education (THE) ranks UW-Madison 49th on its list of World University Rankings for 2020. Last year, UW-Madison ranked 51st.

“The table is based on 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators that measure an institution’s performance across teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook,” indicates THE upon stating its ranking methodology.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities, Center for World University rankings and The Three University Missions rank UW-Madison 32nd, 26th and 38th in the world, respectively. Money Magazine’s “The Best Colleges in America, Ranked by Value” ranks UW-Madison 28th.

“Way to go! UW Madison continues to demonstrate excellence in research, community, and providing a bright future to all those that seek out a learning environment!” says the UW-Madison Division of Infectious Disease in a celebratory tweet.
