Suspect charged for campus, citywide thefts

UW-Madison Police Department arrested Samuel F. Spencer, a suspect connected to a string of thefts that occurred on UW-Madison’s campus in recent months.

According to a statement released by UWPD, Spencer, who has no affiliation with UW-Madison, was arrested on Dec. 4. He was charged with theft, receiving stolen property, operating after revocation, tampering with security devices and possession of marijuana.

Over the course of the fall semester, UWPD responded to more than a dozen theft reports at the Shell, the sports center near Camp Randall. It is believed that to enter the building, the suspect would ask random students to “sponsor” them. Once inside, they stole cash, cell phones, laptops and other valuables.

UWPD said Spencer is a known suspect of other theft cases in across Dane County as well.
