The Wisconsin football team will be without last year’s top receiving target for the indefinite future, following today’s announcement by UW-Madison junior Quintez Cephus that he is leaving the team due to potential “unspecified charges” to come from the Dane County District Attorney’s office.
Cephus, who was second for the Badgers with 501 receiving yards in a breakout season last fall, claimed in a statement posted on Twitter Tuesday evening that he had been “wrongfully accused” and that he is “innocent of any allegations.”
The DA’s office has not released any information regarding the nature of the charges against the receiver. In his statement, Cephus said the allegations are associated with “an incident that occurred in April of this year” relating to what he characterized as a “consensual relationship.”
According to Jeff Potrykus of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Cephus made the decision to leave the team on his own, and was not required to do so by head coach Paul Chryst.
