State Republicans endorse GOP presidential candidates

State Sen. Duey Stroebel, R-Saukville, led a group of legislators in announcing their endorsement of Texas Senator Ted Cruz Monday for the GOP presidential nominee.

Along with Stroebel, six other state Representatives issued their support of Cruz. The state officials included: state Reps. Andre Jacque, R-DePere; Jesse Kremer, R-Kewaskum; Dean Knudson, R-Hudson; Adam Neylon, R-Pewaukee; Bob Gannon, R-Slinger; and David Craig, R-Big Bend.

The news of his endorsement coincides with the announcement that Stroebel will serve as the Wisconsin chairman of Cruz’s presidential campaign. The seven endorsements are the first ones from Wisconsin thus far for Cruz’s campaign.

In a statement Monday, Cruz said he believes Stroebel’s support will strengthen his campaign efforts going forward.

“He heads a group of Badger State leaders who are helping to coalesce strong conservatives around our campaign and make our team very competitive going into the April 5th primary,” Cruz said in the statement.

In the endorsement statement, Stroebel said he supports Cruz because the nation is at a “tipping point” and he believes Cruz is the only candidate who “has the courage to make the tough decisions.”

“After seven years of failed leadership under President [Barack] Obama, we have no room for error in who we elect as our next commander-in-chief,” Stroebel said in the statement. “That is why I am taking on this important challenge.”

Another Republican presidential candidate, Florida Senator Marco Rubio, is supported by Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, R-Rochester, and almost 20 Wisconsin Republicans.

Vos, along with the Assembly GOP and the Republican Assembly Campaign Committee, were the beneficiaries of a fundraiser Rubio attended in Burlington, Wis., in November.

Although Stroebel acknowledges the “talent” of the other GOP nominees, he said he believes that Cruz is the “one candidate that fully appreciates how the very concept of liberty is under assault.”

“I plan on working tirelessly with my co-chairmen and Wisconsin’s liberty focused grassroots activists to deliver Wisconsin for Sen. Cruz and to ultimately elect him our next President,” Stroebel said.
