Madison man avoids potential robbery with bicycle

A Madison man reported a suspicious suspect to the Madison Police Department Wednesday who he believed was wielding a handgun.

The 20-year-old victim told police he was walking his bike along the 500 block of West Wilson Street at approximately 4 a.m. April 2 when a van pulled up next to him, according to police.

The suspect came out of a rusty, “bluish” Astro van and approached the victim, according to police. The victim told police although the suspect said nothing, he believed the armed man was going to mug him and rode away on his bike to avoid conflict. The victim escaped without any injuries, according to police.

Police said the suspect is a 20- to 30-year-old man with a medium build weighing 210 pounds with a shaved or bald head. He was described as wearing a black sweatshirt and black pants.

Police said the investigation is still ongoing.
