UW researchers create world’s largest telescope from South Pole Ice

A group of researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and UW-River Falls collaborated to create the world’s largest telescope, which they made using ice from the South Pole.

The researchers have spent seven years completing the IceCube project, which will provide scientists with information on black holes, exploding stars and neutron stars, according to the project’s website.

In an initiative, titled “Bringing the Universe to Wisconsin,” the project plans to visit every UW system school within the next two years to share findings from the research to students and communities.

The Wiscosin IceCube Particle Astrophysics Center is conducting the initiative, which is sponsored by the Ira and Ineva Reilly Baldwin Wisconsin Idea Endowment.
