Students gain more representation in city politics

Three UW-Madison students and one recent graduate will be approved for city committee appointments Tuesday, creating a larger student voice in city politics.

Daniel Fahey, member of the men’s basketball team, and Julianna Jerosch will join a committee addressing campus moped parking. Sarah Neibart, Student Services Finance Committee chair, will join a planning committee dealing with campus developments. Recent graduate Christian Von Preysing-Barry will be appointed to an advising committee on solid waste.

Although students make up nearly 15 percent of Madison’s population, they occupy few city committees, according to Ald. Scott Resnick, District 8.

Resnick said despite criticisms of students’ short-term residency in Madison, these appointees will better represent the student voice.

“So often I hear arguments that since students are transient members of our community, that a majority are apathetic to the city process...or that their opinions should be outweighed by lifelong residents,” he said. “After hundreds of conversations with students...these reasons are far from the truth.”
