The Student Services Finance Committee approved a budget for
a university childcare service at about $850,000 Thursday, increasing funding for grant programs.
The Childcare Tuition Assistance Program provides UW-Madison students with childcare services and assists eligible students with financial expenses through grants.
While CCTAP requested a $65,900 increase for staff salaries, SSFC Chair Sarah Neibart said the raise could not be granted because the committee cannot approve salary increases.
SSFC added around $32,000 to the group's grant budget to "boost the childcare centers."
Rep. Cale Plamann said it was important to provide CCTAP with enough money to remain competitive in the childcare market.
"I think that this is one of the most important things that we could be investing in," Plamann said. "This one would be a real tragedy if we even start to fall behind."
Also at the meeting, SSFC heard the Student Activity Center Governing Board's budget request.
The contract included money allocated to installing a speaker system that would allow workers to make an announcement to the entire Student Activity Center in an emergency situation.
The committee will determine the SACGB's budget Monday.
