Recycling Coordinator George Dreckmann said the implementation of new programs for plastic bags and one for construction and demolition waste were important in reaching the city's goal for 2010.

Madison is set to start a pilot program in June for the collection and composting of household organics. Through the use of this program Cieslewicz said there is the potential to drive the city's waste diversion rate as high as 80 percent.

""While we are proud of our success, we have more work to do,"" he said in a statement.
