UWPD training to take place with emergency response test

The University of Wisconsin Police Department will implement a campus emergency response test Tuesday between 7 a.m. and 12 p.m.

Actors will participate in the emergency test to imitate real-life situations, including the faking of injuries. Police officers participating may also have their weapons drawn to add to the intensity of the scene.

According to university officials, the exercise is designed to improve the campus' response to a real emergency situation. UWPD Lt. Michael Newton said the event will test many facets of the University Response Plan.

The response test will be held inside and outside of the Food Research Building located at 1925 Willow Dr. and will involve approximately 45 emergency personnel and several motor vehicles from the UWPD station.

UWPD will post signs explaining the details of the test, reiterating the fact that the event is only an exercise.

Officers may limit the amount of movement in the area but do not plan on causing any inconvenience to nearby onlookers.

Department directors are asking community members to continue on with their daily business and to not be alarmed by the emergency activity.
