Wrestling team knotted up with UNI

The No. 10 Wisconsin wrestling team battled to its first tie of the season Saturday night against Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The 16-16 tie places Wisconsin at 4-0-1 for the season. 

 

UW fell behind 3-0 from the start as junior Justin Peterson lost to UNI's No. 16 Alex Dolly 7-3 at 174 lbs. 

 

No. 12 sophomore Trevor Brandvold tied the score at three when he secured a 6-4 victory against UNI's Andy O'Loughlin at 184 lbs. Brandvold amassed a 5-0 lead but had to hold on in the final minute for a two-point victory. 

 

UNI pulled ahead again when No. 4 Badger junior Dallas Herbst narrowly lost his first match of the season 4-3 against Andrew Anderson at 197 lbs. Anderson secured the biggest upset of the night with a one-point escape with eight seconds left in the match. 

 

Junior Kyle Massey (No. 11) gave the Badgers the 7-6 lead with a 12-0 major decision against Dustin Bauman at heavyweight. It was the Badgers' only bonus point of the night. 

 

At 125 lbs., sophomore Drew Hammen added to the Badgers' lead with a 6-5 win over UNI's Caleb Flores. Flores led 5-2 going into the third period, but Hammen recorded an escape, a takedown and one point of riding time for a comeback 6-5 victory.

At 133 lbs, No. 18 junior Zach Tanelli was upset by UNI freshman Trent Washington. Tanelli was tied with Washington 6-6 heading into the third period, but the UNI grappler had three takedowns and a near fall in the third to beat Tanelli 14-11. 

 

No. 13 sophomore Kyle Ruschell scored an upset of his own against No. 10 C.J. Ettelson at 141 lbs. to put Wisconsin up 13-9. Ruschell was also tied with Ettelson heading into the third period, but his escape in the third won the match 6-4. 

 

UNI's Charlie Ettelson tied the score at 13 when he defeated Wisconsin true freshman Kendall Vogel in a 13-0 major decision. 

 

At 157 lbs., No. 3 senior Craig Henning registered a takedown and one point of riding time in the third period to defeat Jarion Beets, 4-0 and put the Badgers ahead 13-16. 

 

In the last bout of the night, senior Jake Donar faced No. 5 Moza Fay at 165 lbs. After trailing 6-0 to Fay in the first period, Donar responded in the second, scoring five points of his own to claw the score to 9-5. With no one scoring in the third period, Fay won the match 9-5 to put the final team score at 16-16. 

 

The Badgers will open their 2007-08 Big Ten Conference season Monday when they travel to Columbus, Ohio for a dual against No. 13 Ohio State (4-1-0).  

This is the first conference match-up for both teams, and it will begin at 6 p.m. inside St. John's Arena.
