A 19-year-old UW-Madison sophomore died Thursday in an automobile accident near Mauston, Wis., the Wisconsin State Journal reported Monday.
Shreya R. Dixit, of Eden Prairie, Minn., was a passenger in a westbound vehicle on Interstate 90/94 when it left the road, hit an embankment and crashed into the cement pylon of an overpass at 8:16 p.m.,"" according to the WSJ.
The report indicated that two other passengers had non-life-threatening injuries and the driver, Kelly Hamilton, a sophomore at Milwaukee Area Technical College, was not injured. All four had seat belts on, and alcohol was not a factor.
According to the Star Tribune, Dixit was heading home to spend the weekend with her family and friends.
She had transferred to UW-Madison this year from Bryant University in Rhode Island to pursue a degree in international business.
A scholarship fund in her name will be created at Benilde-St. Margaret's High School in St. Louis Park, Minn., where Dixit was a 2006 honors graduate.
