Panel hears arguments in Justice Ziegler case over ethics violations

A special Judicial Conduct Panel heard arguments on the case of state Supreme Court Justice Annette Ziegler Monday, who was accused of failing to disclose conflicts of interest in several cases she ruled on prior to her election in April 2007.

The panel is tasked with reviewing Ziegler's behavior and determining whether she violated the ethics codes that govern judges in the state.

According to Mike McCabe, executive director of the ethics reform group Wisconsin Democracy Campaign, the panel did not issue a ruling Monday and did not say when a decision would be reached.'""

The panel's recommendation will be considered by the state Supreme Court. The Supreme Court has the final authority on what discipline may be given to Ziegler.

McCabe said the hearing Monday was ""disappointing at best.""

'""Ziegler attorney Jon Axelrod declined to comment on the hearing.
