Assembly bill 559, which allows donated Badger season tickets to be tax exempt, passed unanimously Wednesday in a state Assembly committee. UW-Madison Athletics Director Barry Alvarez testified at the Capitol before the vote.
State Rep. Phil Montgomery, R-Green Bay, authored the bill which passed the Assembly Ways and Means Committee in a vote of 11 to zero.
Alvarez said the Department of Revenue would collect the sales tax on donations to fund non-profit athletic foundations if the bill failed, according to the Associated Press.
The bill was previously introduced in 2005, where it was approved in the assembly but failed to pass in the state Senate.
The full assembly is next to act on the bill, which is cosponsored by three state senators.
