University Police warn students, staff of banned persons at unions, libraries

The University of Wisconsin Police Department is actively involved with persons banned from select buildings on the UW-Madison campus.

Officers are aware of it,"" UWPD Sgt. Jason Whitney said. ""If they're seen [in a banned place], they're going to be arrested or escorted out.""

UW Law School officials sent an e-mail Tuesday, warning students of recent contact with Richard Rathmann, a man banned from 975 Bascom Mall for a year.

Whitney said an individual's ban is strictly based on behavior.

According to Whitney, Rathmann made some references about Virginia Tech in the days following the April 2007 tragedy, which were considered threatening.

""He has no UW affiliation - o - ohe's not a student or staff member - o - otechnically he has no reason to even be there,"" he said.

Whitney said the most common areas of banned persons are the unions and the libraries.

He said UW police have no record of a second suspicious individual, Alfred Fares, who may have been banned from the law school earlier this year.
