A Madison horse show turned tragic Friday, as four people were found dead in their trailer. Police suspect the victims died of carbon monoxide poising.
DeVere and Barbara Clay, along with their granddaughters Hope Briney, 13, and Erin Briney, 10, were found dead in their horse trailer Friday morning. Authorities said the four had camped out overnight for the World Clydesdale Show at the Alliant Energy Center.
The victims, all Tomah, Wis., natives, reportedly had a well-ventilated trailer, but did have a space heater in their horse/sleeping trailer. It is unclear whether the space heater played a major role in the cause of death.
Still, despite the deaths, the horse show involving more than 600 Clydesdales continued through the weekend. The organizers of the show did hold a moment of silence before the event started Friday.
