'Show and Blow' not deterrence

The new Show and Blow"" policy in effect during football games is another attempt of the UW-Madison Police Department and the dean of students to deter students from drinking, and once again, their attempts are no more than another obstacle for students to hurdle.

The usefulness of this program would not be in question if the majority of students who attend football games arrived at the gates without alcohol in their system.

Although the university intends this program to serve as deterrence to drinking in excess before football games, there are blatant loopholes that render the program useless. Marked students can sell or trade their tickets and then continue to drink in as much excess as they please. If the threat of a citation and a hefty fine are not enough to deter students from acting belligerently at games, how much more deterrence will this new policy add? There are not even outlined punishments for breaking the rules of this policy, so there is no muscle behind the rules.

We do not want to criticize the university for trying to reduce lawless behavior at football games, but we feel the Show and Blow policy is flawed, and the threat of a citation as well as the Athletic Department's ticket revocation policy is enough to deter the majority of students from showing up at the game heavily intoxicated.
