Police break up State Street fight, Saturday bar brawl

The 600 block of State Street was the scene of about a 1:30 a.m. fight and a separate classic bar room brawl"" Saturday, according to the Madison Police Department.

The brawl escalated at about 8:30 p.m. Saturday at State Street Brats when Nicholas Bradbury, 23, of Freeport, Ill., who was associated with a bachelor party, allegedly started wrestling and fighting with other male members of his party after bartenders told him he was cut off from drinking more alcohol, according to a police report.

Joel DeSpain, MPD public information officer, said more than six police officers responded to the brawl, which involved upwards of ten people fighting in the bar with employees trying to break up the fight. One officer had to resort to using a taser on Nicholas Bradbury to help calm the situation.

Bradbury was arrested for alleged battery to an officer and three others in the bachelor party were also arrested on separate charges.

""A few bouncers were hurt '¦ one was pushed and hit his head on the floor, one bouncer was punched and an officer was hit in the head,"" DeSpain said, adding ""you got a case of a group of guys from Illinois who thought coming to Madison and yucking it up at the bachelor party was the thing to do.""

In a separate incident outside State Street Brats early Saturday morning, MPD arrested three men for allegedly taunting and slapping a member of the Guardian Angels, a national volunteer organization to combat street crime.

According to a police report, the Guardian Angel, 29, told the three male suspects to go home, but instead was circled. The suspects made statements to him, saying ""Guardian Angel fly away,"" and one suspect came at the victim with an open-handed slap.

DeSpain said the Guardian Angel was not hurt and proceeded to call police, which eventually led the MPD to find the three suspects at a Frances Street parking ramp. James Fields, 23 of Madison, was subsequently arrested for battery in connection with the slap.
