UW police nab teens after crime spree

University police arrested two alleged perpetrators Tuesday in connection with 80 recent campus crimes. A police investigation following an incident in Lot 60 Sunday, in which 19 vehicles and two buildings were damaged, led to the arrests of two adolescents believed to be responsible: Edward Burger, 19, and Riccardo Dufek, 18.

Burger and Dufek allegedly stole bikes Sunday morning and rode them around campus, smashing car windows in numerous locations. According to a police statement, they allegedly damaged cars in the Johnson Street parking ramp and drove down Lakeshore Path to UW Hospital. After cutting his hand while smashing car windows in Lot 60, Burger said he sought help at the UW Hospital emergency room, according to a police statement. After receiving treatment they continued to smash cars, including those of University Hospital employees.

Hospital spokesperson Lisa Brunette had no comment on the incidents, but noted most hospital employees park in lots other than 60.

Burger and Dufek have not yet been formally charged. They admitted to a police detective, however, they were anarchists who planned to attack government and student vehicles. The two, however, are not UW-Madison students. Burger is last known to have lived in Middleton, Wis. Dufek's last permanent address is in Milwaukee.

Police connected the pair with numerous other campus incidents. Burger and Dufek admitted to slashing bike tires last week, according to the statement. Police also recovered \significant amounts of property,"" including stereo equipment and a stolen bicycle, through the investigation.

Damage from these crimes was estimated at $15,000.

University police and representatives from UW Transportation services were unavailable for comment.
