Gov. Scott McCallum signed the budget adjustment bill into law, correcting the $1.1 billion deficit after legislative and partisan haggling locked the proposal up in conference committee for months.
The act cut most state agencies' budgets by 6.5 percent, decreased funding to the UW System by $44 million and paid for the majority of the deficit through the one-time sale of the state's share of its tobacco settlement.

undergraduate students rose 8 percent to $3,854 from $3,568 last year. Tuition for out-of-state undergraduates climbed 13 percent.
The Legislative Fiscal Bureau predicts the state will face a $2.8 billion deficit for the next two years.
