A Boston Globe reporter was shot in the shoulder and wounded in Ramallah Sunday, amid Israeli warnings that foreign journalists were at risk and should not be in the West Bank city, which is currently occupied.
The Associated Press reported that Anthony Shadid, a Daily Cardinal alumnus, was standing in a doorway of a shop when he was shot, according to Globe foreign editor James Smith.
The shooting left Shadid in conscious and stable condition in a private Arab hospital in Ramallah. Officials at the Globe, along with Shadid's family, were charting the best course of action to get the reporter out of the country. An abundance of Israeli troops control the area where the Globe reporter was shot, although the culprit has yet to be determined. Israeli officials promised a full investigation.
A coalition of 10 foreign journalists went to see Shadid in the hospital, but soldiers who were just inside the door refused entry.
The city was declared closed on Friday, although enforcement was sporadic. Journalists and others were able to enter the zone through Sunday. Shadid was the second journalist wounded in recent days. Last Friday, Palestinian television cameraman Carlos Handal was wounded in the face while driving through Ramallah.
