Kelly Steinborn, the UW-Madison freshman taken to the hospital April 17 with meningococcal disease, is improving and remains in stable condition, a hospital spokesperson said Sunday.
The nurse attending Steinborn, though unavailable for comment, said through the spokesperson that the only information she could release was that Steinborn's condition was improving.
Steinborn, after suffering from a 101.5-degree fever and continual vomiting since the evening of April 16, was taken to Meriter Hospital, 202 S. Park St., the morning of April 17.
Certain residents from Steinborn's floor in Sellery Residence Hall were treated with antibiotics, and no additional students have reported becoming sick.
Meningococcal disease results when bacteria that usually exist harmlessly in a person's nose and throat invade the bloodstream or body tissues. Meningitis, marked by symptoms including a sore neck and high fever, is a common result of this invasion.
