As the Pentagon slowly returns to its former self, researchers at the University of Southern Mississippi are developing an environmentally friendly paint to be used on the repaired and replaced walls.
Traditional paint's characteristic putrid odor while wet is a result of volatile organic compounds, which pollute the air. The new paint, called American Pride, uses a small chemical unit taken from castor oil to replace the traditional solvent that cuts down on the harmful odors.
\The bottom line is this technology uses castor oil, soybean oil or lesquerella oil to allow us to make latex polymers that have wide applications,"" said Shelby Thames, professor of polymer science at the Southern Miss School of Polymers and High Performance Materials.
