It is still not clear how the elimination of the 220 jobs throughout the UW System will affect UW-Madison, Vice Chancellor of Administration John Torphy said Monday.
The statement came in response to last week's announcement by Wisconsin Department of Administration Secretary George Lightbourn that 900 state jobs would be eliminated due to the state budget deficit.
According to Torphy, there appears to be no need for any layoffs, and the university will attempt to only cut positions that are currently vacant or for which initial funding was anticipated in the 2003 fiscal year.
Torphy said once the state completes work on the projected $1.1 billion budget deficit, the Board of Regents will be able to discuss how the budget and job cuts are divided throughout the UW System.
