Athlete's death cancels track and field contest

The death of a Penn State pole vaulter Saturday during the Big Ten track and field indoor championships led to Sunday's cancellation of the remainder of the competition.

Penn State sophomore Kevin Dare, 19, died during a pole vault attempt when he hit his head on the ground. According to witness accounts, Dare fell backward headfirst and hit the metal \box,"" the 8-inch-deep area where the pole is planted.

He was attempting a 15' 7' vault, which was significantly less than his personal best for the event.
