Over three years ago Craig Venter claimed that his company, Celera Genomics, would decode the entire human genome in three years'well ahead of the publicly funded Human Genome Project.
Even after successfully decoding the genome, Venter resigned the presidency of the company he helped create.
The race between Celera and the Human Genome Project ended in June of 2000 with a tie declared by President Bill Clinton.
Celera attempted to sell segments of the genome and remain a company based solely on selling information. Unfortunately, while Celera has been trying to make a profit selling the information, the Human Genome Project has been giving it away.
Celera is expected to change its current structure and begin to develop its own tailor made drugs.
Venter, an expert in the scientific aspects of the company, did not have enough experience in business aspects to continue as president.
