Stemming from an anthrax scare that has mandated extra precaution in the handling of mail, nationwide postal delays have prompted UW-Madison admissions officials to extend application deadlines.
Keith White, associated director of undergraduate admissions, said he understood that the new environment of caution might slow up the flow of mail service.
\We recognize that the postal service has its hands full with the anthrax scare,"" he said. ""This is possibly going to result in delays in the mail.""
Because of that, the deadline for applications for the spring semester has been extended from Nov. 1 to Nov. 15.
White has also encouraged students to file their applications electronically via the admissions Web site.
""We encourage students, as we have for the past several years, to utilize our electronic application, which doesn't use the [postal] service,"" he said. ""[This] should ensure that their application will be received in a timely way.""
This does not mean that students will be faulted for filing traditional paper applications, White said.
""We will do everything that we can to ensure that their application is reviewed fairly, and we are not going to disadvantage applicants because of delays within the postal service,"" White said.
