Tuesday afternoon, The U.S. Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights confirmed that the UW-Madison Athletics Department achieved Title IX compliance.
The Athletic Department strove to create representation for its male and female student-athletes in proportion to respective undergraduate enrollments.
Documents submitted by UW for the 2000-'01 academic year showed that women comprised 52.44 percent of Wisconsin's student-athletes. With UW-Madison's undergraduate enrollment at 53.29 percent female, the university has demonstrated compliance with Title IX's requirement that students of both sexes be provided nondiscriminatory participation in intercollegiate athletics.
Since a complaint was filed in 1989, the university has added women's softball, lightweight crew and ice hockey.
